The first W&SS Western New York Gathering was a success! Good people, good food, good weather, and of course, great knives! Thanks to everyone who helped make this initial get-together such a fun time. I can't wait until the next one. :)

On to the pics-
The location was beautiful, right on a nice little pond.

The conversation was as high quality as the company. That's the Lone Gunman in the foreground, avoiding the cameraman!

Here's DPKnives with the Mrs. She's a sweet lady, and makes an awesome beef stew.
PIC-1787.jpg

Some of DPKnives' collection. These are some great-looking, well-designed, extremely functional blades. Hopefully, someone else took better pictures than I did.
PIC-1776.jpg

DPKnives and Paul Tsujimoto (from Ka-Bar) inspecting a chopper project by Never Too Sharp. A lot of the knife talk went over my head, but it was great just observing these experts discussing their trade.

Continued...

DPKnives' granddaughter Mackenzie, fishing the pond.
PIC-1792.jpg

Some of the group went for a woods-walk. We ID'ed a few edibles such as elderberry and blackberries. The blackberries were tasty.

DP's awesome Kephart knife, resting on Kephart's book!
PIC-1790.jpg

Paul gave a terrific class on sharpening. I lucked out as he used my Boy Scout hatchet for the demo.:D Thanks again Paul!

Touching up the hatchet on the stones.

I am now addicted to apple chicken sausage.

Some of the local scenery.

Southpaw sniper!
PIC-1789.jpg

Paul opened up shop out of his truck. We got to check out really some nice blades.
PIC-1775.jpg

He sold me a pair of Becker Neckers. I threw on some orange 550 cord wrap.
PIC-1799.jpg

Lone Gunman brought this cool walking stick along. Note the attached knife!
PIC-1780.jpg

I brought my homemade primitive fishing rig. The cordage is from cattail fiber.
PIC-1802.jpg

While my carved wooden hooks were a no-go, the rig worked well with metal hooks.
PIC-1791.jpg

Success! Hmm...who's this handsome devil?
PIC-1797.jpg

Look at this little guy! Betcha he wasn't expecting to be taken in by a modern-day caveman. :p

It was a great day that passed far too quickly. By time we were sitting by the fire, looking at the stars, I was pretty worn out (and a little bug bit). But hanging with this bunch and enjoying the WNY summer was a wonderful way to spend our time. I'd sign up for another meet in a heartbeat.

If anyone else has pictures of the gathering, please post them! And thanks for looking.

Great pics, Would you mind posting a pic of the wooden hook you made.. I must agree i a gathering is an awsome thing. You get to meet great people face to face. Actualy talk and not just type. I never seen as many knifes as when everyone gets togher. Like you alot of the knife talk is way over my head. But when someone hands you one and you hold it.. No explanation needed. Cant wait for more pics to be posted..

I very much regret missing this. But for good reason, There was a fund raiser for a friend that was diagnosed with testicular cancer last month. I attended a large airsoft game held on a National Guard facility.

Ya know I really should have attended as it would have saved me from a chipped front tooth, cuts heal:D

John Thanks for starting the thread I was about to just now and saw this one. I had to take our granddaughter home today. I know Mackenzie our granddaughter , Mary my wife and myself had a great time. It was nice to meet you , Paul (toooj) , And Dale (the lone gunman). Mary and I already knew Roger (never too sharp) and larry ( Larry917). I have been back and forth with Toooj a couple of times today and the wheels are starting to plan next years event. Oh by the way Roger has your cup. Ok here are a bunch of shoots. Doug

Iam pretty darn sure a good time was has by all from what everyone said. Paul (Toooj) did not want to leave but had promised his wife he would be home, John G seemed to not want to leave Saturday night or should I say Sunday morning. I have a lot of ideas running in my mind to make this some what bigger and better next year. this year was great we got to meet some real great people and get the ground work laid for the next one. Toooj has already added us to his calendar for next year and will bring a bunch more knives next year. Here is a link t another post in the Becker forum I started today as well. Doug

cool, i'm just south of Elmira, NY on the PA side...lemme know the next time y'all get together

Looked like a nice time. I like your primitive fishing rig. What went wrong with your wooden hooks?

I can't believe I forgot my tin cup! Thanks guys, for grabbing that.

As for the wooden hook, it was too large. The bait was almost too small for the hook, and the wood was so boyant (sp?) That it wanted to float. Even with sinkers, the hook ended up upside-down underwater. Plus, the fish didn't seem interested in it. Maybe larger bait would help, but I'll work on smaller hooks.

I'll post pictures of the hook when I get a chance.

The gathering was fun and I am looking forward to the next one. Maybe next time John will bring a tent / sleeping bag and hang all weekend =)
