WNY Gathering!

Hey guys, had a great time there. Doug (dpknives ) had some beautiful handmade knives, and his wife cooks a good beef stew. I was glad to meet them along with john g.,never to sharp and larry917. Paul from Ka-Bar was cool too. Awesome area for a campsite, so quite there. Couldnt have been better. I really enjoyed it. After I left I got a second wind and instead of taking the direct route home I went down 19 to Gennesee to coudersport and back down route 6. Made a few site seeing stops on the way, I tell you, when I got home about 8pm, I went in and right to bed. Hope we can do it again next year. Thanks all for a great time.

Ray I hope you have as good of a time as we did. It was nice to have the turn out we had for the first one and it worked out very well. We got the bonus of Paul being so close to us and he was able to bring the Beckers and ka-bars and do the sharpening seminar as well. With any luck we will get Ethan Becker to it as well. Doug

Dale it was great you could make it and have a good time. Sounds like you must have found something pretty cool on the way to get home at 8:00 PM. Hope to see you next year. Doug

I'm so bummed that I missed this. I was doing a sort of survival taking care of my sick wife and son. Nothing like a summer flu to ruin a weekend.:grumpy:

Next time...

Here's a pic of my carved hooks next to a Kershaw chive for scale. Sorry for the delay in posting.

John, I was thinking if you rigged those up like a carolina rig, might be perfect . since the hook is bouyant, you could adjust the sinker ( or rock in survival situation) so the hook was up off the bottom at whatever depth you choose.Or close to the hook for bottom feeders. Scrap the bead and barrel swivel.

I think you're absolutely right, Gunman. Also, I wonder if placing a short line under the hook w/a sinker would help or hurt?

I'm still figuring things out, like what to do for natural sinkers (carved stones?), etc., but placing weight near the hook helps a lot. I went out yesterday to Lake Ontario. Had a bunch of nibbles, but no big fish seemed interested. I'm working on making more line in order to increase my casting range.

John G,

Great Pics! You forgot to memtion your sumac ade. Good stuff!
I am sorry I missed your fishing demo. I would like to see your wilderness rig up close.
I had a great time and am sorry I had to go early.
There is always next year.

Best Regards,

Thanks Paul! It was good to meet you too. Here's a pic of yesterday's jug of sumac-ade. I added a bit of sugar to this batch. Good stuff.:)

Boy John I keep looking at that Sumac-ade and it makes me want to go find some and try to make it. I would like to try it sweetened as well. Doug

Anyone in WNY going to the Stone Tools and Primitive Tech show Saturday? I'll be there (Letchworth park) around noon if anyone wants to meet up.

John I just checked the park website and the stone tool show is next weekend. Doug

Ha! Nice catch Doug. I would have felt pretty silly wandering the park looking for a show that's not there. Next weekend then!:o

Sounds good, Never Too Sharp. I'll confirm my time and day when I know for sure.
