could you post the pics of the cans before you assy them? I wonder how those stoves considered by the ranger when you use them backpacking

I will have to wait until I build another this wekend.

Very cool! This type of stove is new to me. This may be a stupid question but can you describe the process of starting the initial fire inside the stove? Do you just build a small fire in the bottom of the inner can? Im guessing up to pencil thickness pieces of wood? I think I might try to make one of these. :)

Hi Valcast1, That pic you posted for Bushman5 Is all i needed, Thanks. How long does the wood burn in there before you need to add to continue cooking??? I watched some you tube and the ones that have the fan installed burn like a torch.

I just threw together a little prototype I made from a ranch style blacked peas can and a large sliced peaches can I dug out of the trash. After looking at this post and another design I saw on youtube I basically followed the same design shown here except I added some vent holes at the bottom of the inner can..............AND IT WORKS! Once it got started it became totally smokeless and I could see the brurner holes at the top of the inner can reburning the smoke/ woodgas.....Carbon monoxide?? Anyway now I got to make a bigger one. I guess I got to much free time on my hands.
This is the other design I looked at : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a8a6ZFisGDM

I've picked up a quart can, but haven't had a chance to build one yet. I've also got one of the Woodgas XL commercially made stoves -- it's around the size of a #10 can (about a gallon), with a built in fan, like the old Sierra Stove.

It's pretty amazing. Burns great without the fan on, and it's an absolute inferno with the extra air flow. It's a little big to carry far (2#, and fairly bulky), but I'll take it backpacking on short trips when my gf really wants a fire (lots of burn bans here).

Heckuva backup emergency stove, too -- I could cook on this thing for weeks just on twigs from my yard.

I wasn't so lucky with my progresso can.. It's a bit too thick at the ring but will break out the sand paper this weekend to knock it down a bit...

I did find a delmonte fruit can that fit but cant empty it for the sake of just getting the can... PLus I'm allergic to the fruit thats in it...lol So will try the sandpaper first to see how that goes..

Don't know how I missed this one. My on-line time has been periodic lately. I just wanted to say that this is a CLASS 1 thread! Exactly the kind of thing that made me stick around W&SS in the first place. Great job valcas1!

Thank you Ken. I appreciate that coming form someone that has added so much quality information to the WSS board.

Tuxdad and sircantaloupe please dont take this the wrong way. Are you cutting the bottom out of the paint can and inserting the soup can through the bottom? I have built more than a dozen of these an have not had a problem. I have been using a 19 .oz soup can with a pull tab top. I think I have another post that might show it clearer, I will try to dig it up.

None taken Brother... It's just the ring that's just a bit too thick.. The can is a 18.5 oz can, while the cans of pineapples are 20 oz cans... It's just the rings on the top of the cans that are just a hair thicker..

Hi Valcas1. You motivated me to try to build this one, another based on this design but smaller, and a few alchy stoves.
The alchy stoves failed. I used the penny design based on the heniken cans. I just couldnt get them to seal properly. I could get them to stay lite, but they never blossomed.

With your stove, I had to get a can and hammer it down into the 1 pint can. But after seeing yours, I have a question. Is the can that is inside the 1 quart can have the bottom cut off? Cause I didnt do that and while my stove will keep the coals smoldering, it wont stay lit.

This is your stove:

The inner can is not cut out on the bottom. Just the outer qt. paint can is. Maybe the following pictures might help.

I would say that the problem you are having has more to do with the amount of holes in the cans. It doesn't look like you are getting the proper airflow. Just a thought. Hope this helps.

How's your stove working so far ?? Have you figured out how many half inch holes you needed for it to operate properly ???

Tuxdad, all my test burns have been done with just the four half inch holes and I have been very happy with them.

Thanks valcas1. I didnt have time too finish the stove due to business but I plan on trying to complete both of them when I return. Thanks for the clarification.

Valcas1, google magic heat stove kit and look at the top of it, its just a sterno can with a pot stand on top of it, but the top of it, the pot stand, you ready, press fits perfectly on top of the paint can, I've made two of these so far and they work great, thanks for the post, you can get the magic heat stove kit at Ace for 12 bucks.
