For some reason the lighting makes the imperfections in the grain look rough and splintery in this picture and there appear to be low spots but the handle is in fact perfectly smooth and regular.

Be warned, it is a slippery slope. You will most likely not stop with one.
It is a very useful pattern. I found the handle shape to feel very good in hand.
