But wait no........
Apparently the maker of the scales did not stabilize the pine cone before casting. My supplier (who was reselling these scales) stood behind them though and replaced all the scales with my choice of stabilized wood. They are the recognized leader in that field and process that themselves. So I had to browbeat my customer a little with that first set of three pictured, to send em back to me to re handle them. She loved them so much she wasn't even gonna and hadn't said anything even though the handle scales were falling apart. She really loved the bronze color of the casted pinecone too. Found some box elder in a similar color. This is how they went back to her:
