Woods SAK?

Been thinking I might want to bring a SAK with me in the woods, I usually carry a 28in axe, a 4in blade (usually a mora classic) and a folding saw. But I think a SAK might be a big help. From what I have been thinking I would prefer it to have a blade, a saw, bottle opener and can opener. Im not sure if any of the current SAK models have these, but if so any info would be great. Also just want to know, what SAK do you carry in he woods and why?

By the way, I do not carry any firearms so i don't need any tools to help fix em.

Thanks.

If there's a better woods SAK than a farmer, I don't know what it is. Blade, saw, and the best awl in the business!

Carl.

The forester and rucksack have great locking blades and a large saw that will get you through 2 inch limbs. If you want something a little more compact, the hiker or camper got what you describer and are less expensive than the farmer and arguably more comfortable to hold since they are a little thicker.

Another vote for the farmer here! It's strong, compact and has just the right tools (including the best awl in SAKdom!).

Be honest, how often do you use your awl in the woods? Do you loose weight so much you have to keep putting new holes in your belt :p. Just seems like a Bottle opener would be more useful

yup. i probably use the bottle opener on my farmer the most. ;)

the awl is useful for drilling holes into cut sticks for guy line rigging. tension bars. hope that made sense...not sure the real name for this. i'm sure someone else can give the true term. i'd actually be interested to know what it's called. having to call it, "cut a piece of stick and drill holes in it and lace it through the guy lines for tension adjustment" is a real mouthful. :D

I only have a couple SAK's

1. one hand open Trekker, pretty handy, large saw and blade, plus a lot od other things, cam opener, bottle cap lifter, T handled awl . phillips

2. Mechanic. Ithink, maybe craftsman. I got it because it had saw, scissors, file, and pliers. plus other features. pretty handy knife.

I have the Huntsman, but then I also carry it in the city. And the suburbs. And at work.

That really depends on what you want the SAK there for.
If you want it mostly for the blade, then go with the liner lock 111mm's like the Trekker or the Forester. Those models have the most robust locking knives. They also have the wood saw to go with it.
If you want it mostly for the saw, then those would be good too, but upon further inspection, you would notice that the slide lock 111mm's such as the Hunter, while having a less robust blade, have wood saws that have more robust profiles. Also you would see that their saws are in the middle, as compared to the liner lock's that have the blade in the middle.
Now if you want it mostly for the other items, such as the openers, and still have the awesome blade and saw capacity, well then yes, the Farmer would be really good. It is more compact than the others but still has the same "other tool" capacity. And also the Huntsman if you want the scissors as well.

All of these knives would work well and no choice would be wrong. Just pointing out some subtle differences which might help you choose among knives that are practically almost the same.

But seeing as you carry an axe, a mora AND a folding saw, maybe you should just carry a Bantam or a Classic. :D

You can't go wrong with a Farmer or P/E Trekker. They 'll be sharp as a straight razor after a few passes on a strop.Sorry for the poor cell phone photos.:o
