Woods SAK?

Just to throw it in, theres also the micro ( or mini idk) farmer by swissbianco which is just a cadet 2 with the small pen blade instead of a nail file and a smaller saw added, pretty neat looking if small is your thing.

I'd suggest the Farmer or Huntsman, as they're a bit more pocketable than the 111mm models like the Trekker or Forester. The blades on the Farmer and Huntsman don't lock, but I assume that's no problem, since you're carrying a Mora. The Huntsman is a bit more versatile, it has scissors too and a small blade.

I usually have a Farmer in the pocket and a Huntsman in my backpack.

Alox Farmer for a small woods SAK, Trekker for a little heftier tool.

Can't really go wrong with either …

It's hard to beat the farmer, but the tweezers come in handy for ticks. My vote goes to the huntsman which part of my EDC. The One Handed Trekker and Rucksack are also good choices. I would also take a look at some of the Wenger models. Some of the EVO series has a locking blade and the Ranger Series have the largest saw that I have seen on a SAK.

If you have a small fixed blade in the woods with you, do you need a SAK with a saw? Curious as I am looking at a few of these myself. What would you use the saw for that you could not baton faster with the fixed blade? Thanks.

I used the Farmer's saw once to cut **a lot** of long dry grass for a soft base to pitch 3 tents on. A plain edge would dull on those tough woody stems within a few minutes, but the saw was just unstoppable. Im a believer.

Sure do!

Generally, when woods walking I carry my locking Adventurer ...... or a non-SAK folder with my Rambler along for the ride too so that I have access to tweezers and scissors (and a bottle opener for a cold brew at the end of the trail).

Ok, so after looking over the options I think Im gonna go with the Pioneer Harvester, but i might also get the farmer just to see if i like it better.

Thank you everyone for recommendations.

If you have a saw on hand, it makes batoning totally unnecessary. To split a limb for dry wood, just saw halfway through it, and bang it on the ground with the saw cut facing down. The wood will split along the grain and come apart neat as a pin. You can quarter a 2 to 3 inch limb with a SAK saw with no problem. No banging, and no beating on your piece of gear that may or may not be replaceable at the time if your out someplace.

Carl.

I like the One Handed Trekker due to its larger size, but the Farmer carries in the pocket easier.

You cant go wrong with either.

Good point Carl. I am also coming up with a few uses in my day to day life. I think I am sold on the saw blade. Cant decide between a farmer, lumberjack or a bushcraft. I really like the simplicity of the bushcraft but it is nice to have a few tools with you at all times. Hmmm

Several posters have mentioned tweezers, and I also think tweezers are a great thing to take in your gear. But tweezers are so small and light and cheap with so many high quality models to choose from, I don't know if it's necessary to base a SAK choice on whether it includes the marginable SAK tweezers. There are great dedicated tweezers (for example, Uncle Bills or Tweezerman) that are relatively cheap and weigh practically nothing.

If I could humbly make a suggestion, it would be to reconsider basing the SAK choice on the tweezers. Any SAK can be paired with a separate, quality tweezers. :D

Good point. One of these days, I need to get around to buying a quality, pocketable pair of tweezers.

Farmers are nice but when i carry mine i always miss the scissors. So i'd say get the Huntsman! Get one in Stayglow if you can find one!

Or you can carry a SAK tweezers and a safty pin in your wallet.:D

That way you can have alox and your tweezers.

This is my favorite outdoors SAK; it's a Hunter with a scissors/phillips layer added.

My top choice would be the discontinued Vic Safari Trooper with its larger blade, stronger saw, and longer awl and corkscrew (great for undoing knots!) and a lanyard hole THROUGH the handle, not a dinky split ring.
My next choice would be the Vic Forester.
Both the Vic Farmer and the Vic Huntsman are excellent choices as well, and I EDC one or the other, but for the woods/trail, I'd go with the more robust first two choices. I am, however, thinking of pairing up a Farmer and a Rambler.
