One of my daughters and I decided to go for a hike near my house. We found that the woods are still pretty slippery with ice, so we walked in a field.. My daughter wanted to see an animal, so we found a possum. I guess its really been a long winter when you are excited to see a possum, but my daughter found it entertaining....

Great shots Mneedham. No wonder that critter scurried up the tree - when it saw that you had a skinner on hand! That is a cool looking blade.

I like this little skinner... I just got it from a guy named Frank Bridwell, its 1095 and curly maple. I'm looking forward to getting to using it...

LMAO - You can strap a $100 bill and a free blade on it's side for me and it's still ugly.

On a different note - Aren't they nocturnal?

Great pics buddy, those possums are pretty cool eh, I love seeing any wildlife !

Possums are interesting creatures.A very old creature [54 teeth] made for warmer climates since it has no fur on ears or tail.Strangely the Australian opossum has a bushy tail ..Ours often have bits of ears missing from frostbite. When they " play possum " it's not just an act, there are definite physiological changes so he appears to be dead...One ran for president - Pogo !!

myright,

They are often active at night but we have a few local urban possoms that are frequently seen during the day. Maybe they just get hungry and have to forage for more hours? I don't know.

North America's only marsupial. They're ugly and they stink. :)

They seem to be making their way north. I never remember seeing one in my younger days, growing up in NY. I saw my first one in Maryland when I was there in the Navy. When I moved back to the southern Adirondacks in the early nineties, they appeared to have replaced racoons and woodchucks as the most common roadkill and I see them around my house as often as I used to see racoons-- very often. (I think a rabies epidemic in my area greatly reduced the 'coon population.)

Stay sharp,

If you ever corner an opossum you'll see how cute they are. Let one open it's mouth towards you and you'll have nightmares for weeks camping 'cowboy style',LMAO!

I once saw a pair that were so big I thought they were small dogs!! No kidding! I was camped deep in the Florida bush and was awaken by some rustling in the underbrush. I get up and look around and here comes this thing in the half moon light towards me. At first I'm groggy and can't make it out, then I see what appears to be a small, gray dog heading towards me. Thinking man, poor fella must be lost out here so far from a town; but then as it drew nearer I was coming to and could see it was'nt a dog! I stood up on a stump thinking it would just pass by, nope, it stopped dead in front of me standing on the stump looking up at me. I clapped my hands and it was startled and moved off a few feet away. Lo and behold here comes another about the same size right behind it!! First time I've ever seen 2 together, and of that giant size. They waddled off into the moonlit underbrush and left me for the rest of the night. I guess they were making the rounds of established campsites because I was at the end of a spur off the Florida Trail.

I had a pet possum when I was a kid. I caught it when it would fit in the palm of your hand and raised it on dog food and table scraps. It was perfectly tame and an interesting pet. Chris

Nice pics, don't be fooled by the slow looking RAT, they can be very mean & they have a mouth full of needle sharp teeth;) Odd to see one out in the middle of the day ? As for the knife I like the RoachBelly, good design
