From what I understand, the neo-tribal bladesmiths forge and complete knives using all recycled materials. They also use primitive methods for finishing and grinding. I beleive Tim Lively does neo-tribal and frequents BF, you might ask him.

In seven years?

About 400 or so.

In the last two to three, when I KNOW what to look for? About 300.

Oh and for the record, I LOVE my Mini AFCK in M2, my Nimravious M2, My 750 (which is very close to being as good as my Sebi and is a daily carry for me) my 710 in M2 (one of the best blades EVER made IMHO) my 855 (cool little knife). I like BM knives a LOT when they are put together by the one person at BM who knows left from right and not the low wage/don't give a **** chimps
wink.gif

Even over here, we have dealers that sell Benchmade. Have you any idea how many 750's I looked at till I found a perfect one? Over ten (on the day!).

This is NOT a joke. Especialy the looks I get from dealers who just KNOW I am going to ask to see ALL the Benchmade knives they stock (inc, those still in boxes, they HATE me...)
For me I don't have a preference with coatings or plain edge vs combo with Benchmade, I buy the one that is well made. Think about even a small shop, chances are it has one or two of most of the options in a single knife pattern. I was lucky, the 750 that was the best was a satin plain edge. My fav choice.
Never had to do it with a CRK&T or a Spyderco knife. Strange that.

General, you will have to understand if I am extremely suspicious. I have yet to see a single Benchmade with anything more wrong than the tip being very slightly off-center, when closed - a purely cosmetic problem, and never that extreme, anyway. Every new Benchmade I've handled has been at least sharp enough to shave, maybe not easily, but sharp enough to shave, nonetheless. And Benchmade has the best service of any company I've ever dealt with. Not just knife companies. Any company, at all.

Maybe you just expect too much - I have never seen any perfect knife, whether production or custom. Maybe that makes sense, if you had to look through 400 knives to find 5.

Or maybe you're just annoyed at being kicked of Benchmade's forum, after, IIRC, posting about how horrible they were, without cotacting them first to give them a chance to fix the problem.

IIRC??? What does that mean?

Allow me to confirm some issues here.

1. I contacted BM three times and was ignored. Over the space of 3-4 weeks. I posted on the board and they did a FINE job fixing the knife. I am VERY happy with the job they did. They did claim (to the astonishment of many) that they were unaware of the...ahem "issues" that the AFCK series suffer from. Anyhow the blade was fixed (they admited is WAS faulty) and it came back good but not what I expected from a mid price folder.

2. After THANKING them publicly for this and a great level of service. BTW I was NEVER rude or nasty about any of this. Just very upset and annoyed at being ignored.

here:http://192.41.25.213/ultbb/Forum1/HTML/001006.html

3. I was banned for being honest and posting this to a question...

Here

http://192.41.25.213/ultbb/Forum1/HTML/000813.html

THAT got me banned. Well I think so as my posting rights were removed an hour later. I have asked BM support SEVEN times now why I was banned. The answer? SILENCE. What happens if I need to return another knife? Will they continue to ignore a customer then?
frown.gif

4. So lets just say you plain don't belive me on the number of BM blades I have looked at and had to get through to get a good one. Lets ignore the fact that my M2 Nimravious has the SHARPEST factory edge I have EVER had (I posted this on Bladeforums). Lets forget the fact that I plain dislike BM for the way I have been treated. Lets forget the fact that you are a BM fan.

Back to basics, BM claim to make some of the best blades out there, they are overbuilt for you...
frown.gif
RIIIIGHT...

When you get a GOOD Benchmade they are GOOD. I LOVE my BENCHMADE knives. Alow me to repeat that I LOVE THEM. They are WELL made and of a very tight fit. Just like EVERY SPYDERCO blade I own and EVERY CRK&T and EVERY...blah blah blah. Nothing exeptional just well made and fitted. I do NOT expect a Sebenza like fit and finish and yes I HAVE one of those to look at and I KNOW the difference. My expectations are SIMPLE.

Centered blade most of the time, no blade wobble, no scuffing the blade, even grind lines, more or less sharp blade and tight fit. If I want less I will PAY less. BM make some very nice looking blades, but god, you have to examine them closely to get a good one or its plain old luck. NOT what I would expect at this price level.

So, do I have an axe to grind, HELL YES! But only for being ignored and finding that many BM knives are NOT what many of use would term acceptable for the money. When you get a good one, they are VERY VERY good. I consider the 710 a fine folder, one of the three BEST in mass production in the WORLD. I hardly am a BM hater then am I? I like the products when they are RIGHT. I liked the company when it treated me right (even if it is unfair to expect a customer to return a knife to finish the QC stage), at the moment even though I own a number of different models. I do not exist as far as BM are concerned. Oh and if you feel you won't get banned, feel free to post a link to this thread. Be careful though, they ban anyone who does not tow the party line...

General,
Perhaps when you realize that these forums are here to entertain and inform us, and not as a platform for your personal gripes, you will be able to contribute something constructive, and possibly not loaded with personal bias. Your personal experience does not establish a standard.
You say you have an axe to grind with Benchmade, fine. Grind it with them.
You start what is actually a very good thread, IMO, but ruin it by throwing the same old crap in everyone's face.
What's really funny is that you continue to buy from (and therefore support) this company that has treated you so badly. That'll teach 'em. LMAO

One question.
How many mini-AFCKs did you sift through before choosing the one you have? I'm curious because of the...ahem "issues" that the AFCK series suffer from. You must have discarded alot of them.

What, can't you read? To have a conversation you need TWO parties who WANT to talk, well at least some back and forth discusion. Topic closed, I see we have a bunch of BM Knuts here and if I offended anyone, well I am sorry. My problem, which I hasten to add was NOT raised by me here. My post was intended to be a little FUN! and not a cause for me to rant. Again sorry if I vented here.

Anyone who wants to knock me for this feel free. The Mini AFCK was bought from a dealer who 'understands' the need for quality and thus got me a good one. He takes the time to LOOK at all the knives he ships to assure himself and the customer that it is ok. So I did not worry. The simple fact is the Mini AFCK is the only small blade made from M2 with the Spyderhole without paying custom prices. I can put up with some problems (and mine now has blade play, goes off center and scuffing) for the steel.

The fact that I still buy some of their products shows I am not going to cut my nose off to spite my face. I dislike the way I was treated, so if anyone asks I tell them what happened to me. No lies, no prevarication etc, just the truth. I buy what I want, when I want. I don't think my not buying a BM knife will put them out of business. Plenty of companies have found out what happens when you piss enough people off. And if you are honest BM have pissed a LOT of people right off, they are the single biggest cause for complaints over QC I have EVER seen from a reputable company. You think this is a one knut in the wilderness rant? But this is not the place for this and I will shut up about it. I have obviously pissed some people off and as Benchmade won't talk to me, I don't know why I am talking to you about it. You obviously don't want to, so please don't... I won't
frown.gif
Not here and not now.

I would be interested if this is linked to the BM site and see how long it goes unlocked or deleted.

To reiterate
1. I like a good Benchmade I LOVE A GOOD BENCHMADE.
2. The service after sales was 1st class.
3. I am happy with the way I was treated, UNTIL they banned me for being honest.
4. I was willing to accept poor QC to get a knife I wanted, but will never lie to a person and forget to tell them of the problems I had.
5. Quite a few Formites have never owned a good knife before, imagine the disapointment if the first 'quality' blade is a poor QC Benchmade? Or any other for that matter? When Spyderco, CRK&T,Ka-Bar,Ontario,Buck et all can get it right far more consistantly and more often for LESS, why do some jump up and down over my problems? I am not making this up.

Rant over (and I mean over, I will not post here and now about this ANY further. Feel free to e-mail me if you want to continue this)
