hey everybody

got out into the shop for the first time in several weeks and really the first time in over a month. i had a hard time deciding what do with this blade. it started out as a machete, then became a tanto blade (hence the habaki) then i thought it wasn't quite a tanto blade... so i decided to go more of a filipino style with it.
here is what i came up with.

i have never done carving like this before, so if you have some pointers they would be greatly appreciated! if you have any critiques, i haven't finished it yet.. so please let me know what you think!

the blade is 1095 micarta "tsuba" and the wood is cherry.

next step is to do the sheath, then polish the blade, then do the final carving. or that is what i am going to try anyway.
thanks for looking, i would appreciate any help you can give me.
thanks

I like what I see so far. I also appreciate these "in progress" threads.

Hope to see the finished sword.

Thanks Chris.

This looks terrific. That handle looks like it would be really comfortable. Keep the updates coming.

hey guys!
had a bunch of school to do, so didnt get very much done, however, the handle is all glued up so i can finish it, and the sheath is rough shaped.

i took a picture to try and show the "tiger" stripe in the cherry. i also put in the copper transition, to tie in the copper habaki.

gonna pencil in the carvings on the sheath and then on the handle after shaping.

not had much time over finals week (physics and drafting finals today *freaking out*) however, i do have the handle sanded smooth, the pin in, and the carving drawn on.

Interesting thread. Looks like the sword is going to turn out very nice!

Kind regards,

Jos

so what kind of sandata specifically is this inspired by?

i cant say that it is, exactly. it was roughly based off of this drawing:

i this got from a guy here on the forum. i threw a bit of japnese influence in with the saya and habaki.

it is just kinda morphing as i go.
it is alot fun not to have a concrete plan.
thanks!

Looks great Chris!!! Can't wait to see how this one continues to turn out.

Good luck on your finals... :D
