chris....i love it...i love the carving and shape of the whole thing....i wonder about the pin....and if it would look better without it there....it distracts me personally.....great lookin knife!....ryan

Looks great Chris. Is the pin going to be flush or remained raised? The only real detractor for me is the micarta guard. I'm thinking bronze would have looked more at home, but that of course is a personal preference.

thanks guys!
the pin.... welll..... i would have to agree with the pin. i put it in there and then realized there wasnt really any way to make it flush nicely, so there it stays, but if i do it again, i will do a simple bamboo pin and cut it flush.

as for the gaurd.. it is going to be polished when i am done, and while i agree bronze would look better, i didnt have the resources at the time to do it. next time!

thanks for the critique, i really do appreciate it!

i was wondering, i thought about texturing the deepest recess and the round putt part like Dan Farr does on his knives. what do you think?

thanks again!

When it's all said and done this will be one fantastic piece of work! You should be really proud of the skills you have and to be so young too!

I´d think about filling the deeper recess with something than texture. Maybe some sort of inlay? Looks like the deep recess is going to make it a little inconfortable to grab. But that´s just looks.. may it won´t. In any case, inlay or not, texture is a go

This is shaping up super Chris!!! Roger summed it up well!

I think the micarta will make a real nice accent once it's polished. I've used micarta for guards a few times. With the layers running perpendicular to the knife's centerline, and a high polish on the resin, it adds a lot of character.

Thanks for doing the tag along! :)

maybe a Mother of Pearl inlay may look nice in contrast with the guard when its all polished

hey guys! thanks for the comments!
it i has been alot of fun! i am going to dimple the recess and then laqure the whole thing to give it a satin finish. the edges on the carving arnt sharp, so they arnt uncomfrtable, but they do keep the blade from slipping.

i have the sheath all carved up too, but i am putting on a matching micarta collar on it. i will try and get some pics. i cant wait to show you what it looks like as a whole package. i patina'ed the habaki and the blade is in a martial arts polish...

i really appreciate the encouragement, and the advice! i am gonna do the texturing on monday. (they have a sweet rotary tool at work)
thanks for looking!

Doesn't really fit into a particular Filipino category, but that's splitting hairs as the influence is definitely there. I particularly like where you're going with the wood. That handle is going to have mad retention on a swing.

Have to second the bitch about the mosaic pin; I hate them in general. Too artsy/craftsy for me and it clashes with the theme of the rest of the piece. You've obviously got the skill to come up with something more cohesive.

Keep posting the work-in-progress pics!

Oh yes. Definately!

Nice and interesting thread! Thanks for posting.

Kind regards,

Hey guys!

here is the texturing! the color difference is negligable, any idea how to make the colors different?

okay... i put on a coat of really slow West systems resin, letting it soak into the wood, then wiping it off before it set up, so i have a satin-ish finish.
went over it with 500 grit paper and 000 steel wool. then i used a high speed rotary tool to texture the wood. then went over it witha coat of tung oil. and then i took off the blade covering. you can see the hamon very well in the right light.
the sheath is still a work in progress. more pictures to follow.

please let me know what you think!
