Work in Progress

I really like this knife. as mentoned earlier, the proportions are spot on. The damascus, blade shape, and guard are great. The handle material is out of this world! I was also shopping handle material at Blade, ya beat me ta this piece! Nice score!

I currently don't have an example of Russ' work in my collection. Will have to remedy that in 2009.

Congrats, great knife!

Thanks for the compliments on the handle materials, especially. Danbo and Peter Gill are the suspects responsible for my interest in handle material acquisition, and Blade is the best place for it. I also got some stellar Desert Ironwood there.

It was just about 3 1/2 years of being on his list before Russ contacted me about working on this knife. The only change was that instead of a full sized bowie in carbon steel, I decided to take advantage of his earning the MS stamp, and get a damascus fighter.

Excellent decision, STeven.
Not that there is anything wrong with a full-size carbon bowie w/ nice chunk of stag. :D

I am glad this project turned out so well for you. I am anxious to see the sheath. I am sure Paul will do more than justice for you.

Russ is building the sheath himself, Joe.

Some people think the knife is complete...it is not, only the blade, guard and ferrule are finished. Here is some additional handle sculpting....very soon Russ will complete the handle sculpting, add a small domed pin, and finish the sheath.

STeven Garsson

Observe the subtle sculpting changes. (I have been corrected, there is some finish work to be done, and finished of a domed pin, per my request, but you get the general idea)

I think I am gonna be really happy this week....got one done from Ron Newton too, Loveless Dixon Fighter with stag!:D

Thanks, Russ, been an absolute pleasure working with you on this, I hope that you are as happy with the finished knife as I am!

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Looks like it needs a quick buff... but it's definitely Russ Andrews perfection! :D

I think Russ should give it a quick rub with Fiebings Cordovan leather dye to really show the amboyna's rich figure. :)

Owner satisfaction is the safest prediction I will likely make this year.

Nick, is that a joke, a reference to the way he does stag, or are you serious? Sorry for being dense.

STeven- Ha! No, I was serious this time. :) I have found that with woods like Amboyna burl, Afzelia burl, and the like... that if the color and figure doesn't quite pop like you'd want that a light tint dye like the Fiebings Cordovan can make that happen.

I'm not saying it NEEDS it... just sometimes it adds a little juice. :)

It's a stunning knife, and obviously we all know Russ knows VERY WELL how to finish an exquisite knife!  :D

Simply stunning. And whatever finish Russ applied to the handle made it come alive. Nick knew that..... :)

Sweet!!!! I use my unstabilized amboyna because I haven't had much luck getting that color with the stabilized stuff.

Tung oil, I also wonder if Briwax, buffed would yield similar results.

now wouldn't it be cool if someone could do some graphical wizardry to predict the outcome of shading one's handle material?
While it is a beautiful knife, I can't help but superimpose a slightly darkened wood as the handle in my mind's eye. Thanks to Nick!
Anyway, Steven, you definitely have a nice knife in hand.
