Work Sharp Guided Field Sharpener?

Gotta be more people on here now that have used one.

Lets hear your thoughts.

I got one recently. I have a sharpmaker, lansky rod system and a WorkSharp belt-type sharpener. But I still want to be able to do a decent freehand, in case I don't have those available and maybe as a point of pride.
I thought it would be a way to sort of train my hand to keep a consistent angle without a guide. Like training wheels. It seems to work OK. I think if you are sharpening a blade with a more acute edge than the 20 degree angle, you can start your stroke with the spine of the blade a little farther down against the plastic slope. Just pay attention to where you placed it and try to match that.
The nice thing about this sharpener is that the diamond plates are held on with magnets. Easy to clean, and I ended up taking one off and putting it on my Sharpmaker rod with a rubber band. It works well for smaller pocketknives.

I'm pretty new to the sharpening and maintenance of knives, so forgive me if my question is a dumb one. would the 20 degree guides pose an issue of the blade is profiled with say a 30 degree bevel? I have a spyderco and I heard that spyderco puts a 30 degree bevel on the factory edge. to use this thing well, would I need to reprofile it to a 20 degree micro bevel?

The 20° guide on the sharpener is a per-side measurement (making 40° inclusive, measuring the angle from one bevel to the other). So, using it would in fact add a 40° (inclusive) micro bevel to your 30° edge (inclusive, I hope). In other words, the new micro bevel would be slightly more obtuse (wider) than your existing edge; 5° wider on each side, in fact, taking the cutting edge from 15°/side to 20°/side. From a usability and durability standpoint, nothing at all wrong with that. Being that the micro bevel is wider than the back bevel, it should only take a handful of passes to get it done. Not re-profiling, per se, just widening the angle at the very cutting edge.

I love this thing. I habe a Wicked Edge, which is a great piece of kit but for out in the field the work sharp is amazing. I am not a freehander but with the Worksharp I am getting laser beam edges and it is all in one piece.

Thats great to hear. I still havent ordered one, but hopefully will soon :)

I picked one up a little while back. Like everything about it so far! Great field sharpener and can even work as a bench top, albeit a small one, if it's all you have on hand. It gets them shaving sharp every time no problem:thumbup:
