workbenches

I went big....lucky the boards for the top were able to make it through the basement glass block vent window....or these puppies would have been cut in half

...I really like the idea of casters, how are you mounting them and how do you keep the stand from moving around wqhen the equipment is in use???

Hey Chris, Balibalistic and Friends,

So far movement hasn't been a problem. Of the four caster on each stand I'm trying to use two locking ones. Some of the stuff is so heavy it seems to stay put anyway. I'm using two basic approaches. Where I can drill through a metal foot plate on the stand's legs I am using casters with threaded spindles. Whereas, on some of the other equipment I'm actually framing out a little platform covered with plywood. I'm screwing casters that have a mounting plate with four holes onto the four corners of the platform and setting the equipment and its stand on top of the platform. I am gaining a little shelf under the piece of equipment this way as well. I hope that all makes sense.

All the best, Phil

Here are some nice simple plans I found online. You can make it any size you want and use what ever grade lumber you can afford. I build a real nice one for $60 and it took less than 2 hours. This will be multiple post for all pictures.

Chris, can you post the link to this?? i'd like to order some lumber and am unsure exactly how much to get. i think a bench like this would be a great center bench to hold my kmg and horizontal. with two smaller benches at eather side :-)
