Working with D2

almost 3/8 thick for a knife ?

Actually the piece I ended up with is .405"

The first one was lost in the mail and Alpha replaced it with with the closest thing they had left.

Yes it's for a knife. Does that seem odd? I'm probably going to make a kitchen knife out of it, a deba.

Would cut like a wedge instead of a kitchen knife.

Be more like a hatchet ( chopper ) than a slicing knife for kitchen use.

Ah well I can see how it might seem odd if you don't know what the finished thing will look like. Look up "heavy deba". I will be be thinning it a little, but it's supposed to have a thick spine.

That thick piece of D2 is for when I get to it. The other two pieces of steel I got with that order are in line ahead of it, they're .106" .114" AEB-L.

.405" (11mm) is a thick piece to work with. Good luck thinning an entire bar of D-2 down without a surface grinder. I would just make it an extra heavy deba, and use it as is. I think my thickest deba is about 10mm, so by the time you get the knife sanded and shaped, you will be there or a tad thinner.

I did a brief search on "deba" and it seems like a heavy cleaver, is that correct? Usually, such heavy blades are forged to shape, for a good reason.

If you've never worked with D2 before, and are going to grind a full or near-full bevel on stock that thick, you're in for a surprise, friend :) Stock up on belts and patience, you're in for a long day.

Yes I have a feeling I'm in for an education. I have enough to keep me busy before I get to the D2. For one thing I haven't got a viable belt sander yet, I'm planning on draw filing the first two thin ones. First I'm wrapping up the restoration of a couple old carbon kitchen knives, just trying my hand at filework.
