Worst blade accidents?

OK, so this is a circular blade story. Was installing a ducted hood fan in the kitchen. Had a 6" hole saw on a big Milwaukee corded drill going in front of my face as I stood on the counter drilling through the cabinet top. It was chattering a bit. Figured it was tough old heart wood in my 100+ house so pressed on, when like a shot the business end jumped out at me still spinning. Hit my safety glasses (thank God I had them on), tore a flap in my cheek and then another in my bicep before I could lift off the trigger. After catching my breath I patched up with a bunch of steri-strips instead of getting stitches cause I wanted to finish the job. After looking at the saw real close I noted it was out of round, then realized I probably did that when the saw had fallen off the ladder a few minutes before. It was then that I realized how close a call I had had, and that the damaged saw was talking to me a moment before the accident and I didn't listen. I still keep those safety glasses with the red streak of blade paint on the workbench as a reminder to respect your tools.

Worst accident with a blade was getting stabbed in the eye. When i was around the age of Four my oldest sister was make me a sandwich. She was spraying something (i cant renumber what it was) on two slice's of bread, with a kitchen knife... instead of a butter knife. I was behind her watch make the it. Well i was standing on the left side, but my sister though i was on the right side. For some stupid reason she thought it was a good idea to stab of her left shoulder with the knife... May she did it on propose but clams it was an accident. So i was rush to the hospital. I have had five experimental surgery on my eye. The only thing thats holding my right eye together is all the scar tissue. Im mostly blind in my right eye and can only vaguely see shapes and color. Its been about 18 years now.. Here is what it looks like now.

Holy.sheet, some real doosies in here for sure. Have been lucky enough to stay away from BAD blade injuries. What WOULD have been the worst is when I was hacking through a 3" birch with BK9 on base towards ground, cut through it, edge went right into my boot leaving hole 2" long, cutting my pinky toe and ring toe. Very happy to have all 5 toes on both feet today.😊

I got through the 2nd page and appreciate you guys sharing. I just lost my appetite for breakfast, but it puts things in perspective that you can never be too careful.

I'm not afraid to lose limbs BUT to me personally the scariest thing to lose is eyesight  living in todays super dangerous world as blind person must be one of the scariest things! When I had opportunity to get Lasik to get rid of my eyeglasses, I said NO THANK YOU! Can you imagine voluntarily letting someone with LASER go burning your eyes!?!?!:eek:

Well my daughter and I were at our cabin and I was cutting brush BARE FOOT.

a pretty good slice in my thumb while sharpening a large cold steel tanto. I was distracted and pissed at my girlfriend.

I cut the crap out my wrist while cutting sheet insulation with a boxcutter. dumber than shit. was pulling through a hard portion and it zipped right through. Halfway through a tendon. To the ER and we had a new baby at the time. The blood was geysering out. I locked down on it with a rag and never let go til we got to ER. No loss of use.

I try to keep a mild fear of things that can hurt you. Chain saws, guns, motorcycles. I loved riding sportbikes. I rode 8,000 miles one year. About the 10th time I almost bit it. I got rid of the scooter. I was doing everything right. I had it in a low gear and a Dually pickup veered into my lane. I saw the front tires start turning and I blipped the throttle and moved out of the way. On a different day I could have been squashed.

I am pretty cautious with every machine in my shop. They could all fubar me. I hope I never get completely comfortable operating equipment.

I was standing on the edge of the creek. But really idk why. Just not thinking. The worst part is at 6 yrs old she told me I should get shoes on and I didn't. She told every nurse and doctor and my family "I told dad to wear shoes" lol to this day she tells everyone she told me so. God I love her!!!

Chain saws scare the crap out of me. The hospital we went to is a country hospital and everyone said to me "be thankful it wasn't a chainsaw accident" they see a lot of them do to the location of being a remote country hospital. Having my daughter with me helped me stay calm because I didn't want her to panicked and be scared. But inside I was very nervous. Guys this is a good thread. We can get to comfortable and lax about our hobby. Being a archery Hunter it always amazes me how fast you can bleed out. The last 2 deer died within 50 yards of where I shot them. Granted lung shots but still

Had a few - worst was when a manicure knife fell out of the case as I was going down the stairs. I was around 11 at the time. Timing was perfect - it landed on the butt end just as I stepped down on it, running it through my foot with about 3" sticking out of the top of my foot. Worst thing I have seen was when a classmate that should not have been using the jointer in shop class reached into the jointer to do what I don't know, but he basically cut all of his fingers off to the third joint. There was a foot wide trail of blood to the nurses office. I happened to glance over right when it happened - pretty horrifying.

LOL. That reminds me of a lawnmower blade that became possessed and attacked me in my garage. The blade was on my work bench. I bumped something that bumped it off the workbench. It fell to the concrete. I remember looking at it falling and saying to myself no way/no danger its too far away. It was at least 6 feet away from me.

One perfect bounce and it shot straight away at me in a direct freak bounce and stabbed my shin. I was like , ya gotta be kidding me. What are the chances.

Why is is that when you drop a screw, nut, washer, etc. it winds up as far away from you and in the hardest to reach spot possible, but when you drop something sharp it comes right at you? :grumpy::D

Lesson here. WEAR BOOTS WHEN USING MACHETE OR LARGE BLADES when hacking brush!!!

Or pay very close attention to your swings. Chain saw accidents trouble me and for years I wouldn't use one. Got to be really careful with things that cut really fast. I have seen people cut fingers off at work when I was in my teens. Always said there was no way I would run one of those cutting machines, ever.

I have had some serious accidents over the years, but i'm still here.

And then there's a 9,000 pound tractor push back tug I use at my job to push aircraft out from the gate.
Watched a coworker years ago hooking up the towbar when the tractor lurched forward..he was in the zone when the towbar and tractor hitch took his hand clean off.
Now we are talking pure force not sharpness.

I'm a chef and have cut up my fingers plenty of times over the years. Nothing like some of the photos on this thread though.

My dad is down to a pinky and half a thumb on his right hand after sticking it in an industrial mincer. Hasn't slowed him down though.

The process they went through trying to save a couple of the fingers was very interesting. The made 2 fingers out of pieces of 3, sewed 'em on then stuck leaches on the ends 24hrs a day for a week, to assist circulation. Sadly they were a bit too mangled and he lost 'em anyway.

toe-for-thumb.jpg

I knew an idiot who chopped off his left index finger, to avoid his sentence of weekend community work.
