Worst knife deals you ever saw?

I think we are straying from the OPs question. Predictably this has turned into "Brand x or y is overpriced" whereas this is asking about specific knife deals. For instance, I just saw a used PM2 in standard S30V and black G-10 going for $147 plus $8 shipping on 'the bay'. That isn't spyderco's fault. It is a $150 knife brand new but that specific 'deal' is a bad knife deal. People selling used production knives at near or over the price of the knife from the factory is an example of a 'bad knife deal'.

Oh, no you didn't!

Buck has been making quality built knives with great heat treat for decades. A Buck 110 in S45VN will do anything a Sebenza can and will look classier while doing it, for half the price

CRKT/Gerber?SOG are in their own little circle of mediocrity (with notable exceptions).
Half the price, but twice the weight! :D

Fair point.

I think much of this is related to wanting to buy a basic knife from a respected US maker for a reasonable price and so many models being only available in fancy collector configurations or with coated blades that serve no real purpose other than to match the color way. Examples of this include the Benchmade Mini Freek and the requirement to pay the Configurator price for a Bugout with a black/neutral color handle and uncoated blade.

Also a fair point and I also tend to agree with people that find that frustrating. There are a lot of quality US made knives I would love to try out but the price tag seems far higher than what I am getting including the Native, Native Chief, Shaman, Mini Crooked river, Mini Freek, etc.

All I am saying is that there is a difference between a "bad knife deal" and "knives I personally think are overpriced but people are clearly buying them at that price and thus the market incentive to lower the price is non existent." As we all know, materials and labor are only part of the price setting. The primary variable in how much a knife costs is how much people will pay for it. I would own a Shaman today if they were still around $150 but they arent and they arent ever going to be that price again because for every 1 person like me that looks at the knife at $200+ and says "ill pass" there are 50 other people that are throwing bags of cash at spyderco and thats not the companies fault. There is clearly a market for $200 S30v compression lock knives; otherwise they would correct their pricing to match the market.

What we are talking about here are "deals" on knives that are just objectively bad even taking the market into account. I.e a used base PM2 going for more than factory new knives on auction sites etc.

I saw some new folders from Buck. The Decatur looked nice. Then I saw it was 7Cr17 and cost $35! o_O

By this I don't mean on Chinese knock-offs or gas station knives, as that junk is pretty much a waste of money more often than not, and we all know that.

I mean on knives from well known manufacturers that are grossly overpriced. I mean, a knife where you aren't getting what you're paying for on so many levels, a knife that made you wonder "Wait, someone buys THAT?"

To me, that's CRKT Gulf (over 100 euros here, for 8Cr13MoV liner lock) and basically any Rockstead, since they cost in thousands of Euros (Don ZDP or Un ZDP)... for that price you can buy a car.

In case someone wants to give me some heat for mentioning Rockstead here - I would only consider buying them if I'm really really rich and I really really liked something they're making. But I'd still think several times, as at that hardness I don't know if the steel is going to be durable?
And they are also very, VERY stingy with their warranty, you pay few thousands for their knife and they're even searching the internet, looking for any excuse to avoid fixing something that was factory defect which shouldn't be there at a first place at that price point (I remember one thread here). Yes, they're going that far to save few $...
Anything from Medford before they started using better steels. 600.00 for a brick of D2.
