What was the worst shop smell you have ever encountered? This is an oft times smelly profession between rawhide mallets (for straightening), used kitty litter annealing boxes, fermented rancid boiling vegetable oil complete with a boiled fermented mouse :barf: , stinky epoxies, or smelly woods or bones.

So what's your worst smell you have ever encountered in your shop?

The worst smell in my shop ever is me, the morning after an evenings partying, when I've had a lot of beer and baked beans!!!!

I was gonna say that I hate the smell of cooking HT salts ...

... but I think Scott's example pretty much takes the cake!:)

When I'm at IG's shop-----HIM ---that stinky ass Portugee

The only thing that can equal the foul stench of grinding desert ironwood would be quenching into a vat of Parks #50 that I had left uncovered so it could collect 3 dead mice in the bottom:barf:

The only thing that can surpass grinding desert ironwood, is grinding steel afterwards and getting a slow smolder going in the desert ironwood dustpile in the bottom of my metal catch basin :barf:

It might be time we all strained the dead mice, rats, flies, ants and cockroaches out of our quenching mediums. :D

Epoxy and propane.

In my opinon, next to the smell of fear when I brine quench, is the smell of burning antler. I tried burning a stick tang into an antler once. I will not be doing that again any time soon. Sorry no dead things in my quench tanks.

Desert Iron wood is perfume compared to grinding Sucupira. Every time I grind the stuff i keep checking my shoes to see if I stepped in something.

I had to suck up a bunch of water in to my shop vac, and it fermented with wood and plastic dust, dirt, and dog hair and pine needles. After a few days I couldn't turn the vacuum on without filling the shop with almost an ammonia smell. Very strong, like a cat box.

Pretty bad.

you do know that eventualy you have to empty those shop vacs right? :)
i have been known to just the water evaporate out of mine....

Oh and maybe I am a freak but I like the smell of micarta and stabilized wood.
To me they smell like people building cheap bass boats:D Now what about the BEST smelling stuff to grind? My vote goes to amboyna burl in its natural unstabilized state.
