Would anyone be interested in a titanium Katana?

If you make it shorter then the bending would be less of an issue right.

Leave it wider than a normal Katana and slightly shorter and I think you would be almost there :)

Post pics and test it, interested in seeing how performs...

That is a carbon fiber/titanium laminate sword, unless you are referring to another design, and even LESS useful, imo, than a solid titanium sword.

I don't bet I could bend that one real easily, but I COULD beat the living crap out of it fairly quickly...if you want to buy it for me.:D

STeven,
That's the one. I'm not arguing it's a useful design but, then again, I also don't think Warren built it for the purpose of cutting rolled bamboo mats.

Students of Japanese Sword Arts look at katana and katana like objects with the usual reverence traditionally afforded these items....but they are also tools to us, tools to be used in the practice of our arts.

We look for function first(as opposed to collectors, who are looking for the perfect hamon and geometry/finish). You think cutting rolled tatami(NOT bamboo) we tend to think more about hard yellow bamboo, and for me, thick stuff at that. This material represents a real challenge, and hitting a knot in this material is renowned for catastrophically messing up sword blades.

Hard yellow bamboo would be an easy target to cut compared to a human wearing say, a thick leather jacket or body armor.....function and practicality are of the utmost importance because although we fully realize the probability of cutting a person in half with a katana is virtually nonexistent, we TRAIN like we are going to do it tomorrow.

So, while the OP seems motivated to make this item, and that is just fine, and I would certainly like to test it myself, stating that it might not be such a good idea seems pretty helpful to me, as long as the reasons for this position are explained.

Knowing the material is one part of engineering, knowing the application is AS important.

It's a bloody titanium Katana... Every little boys dream! Make it. Have fun with it. Ultimately destroy it... I destroyed my titanium hockey stick sword with double sided pinned on razor blade edges when I was 11! Boy did it cut!:)

Huh, I always thought that they were more than "tools", they are an extension of your body, and your soul.

As for the OP, if you have the time and inclination to do it, why not give it a try?

I cant speak for STeven, but probably why he said also.

Back on Topic, I say go for it.

rev·er·ence   /ˈrɛvərəns, ˈrɛvrəns/ Show Spelled [rev-er-uhns, rev-ruhns] Show IPA noun, verb, -enced, -enc·ing.
–noun
1. a feeling or attitude of deep respect tinged with awe; veneration.
2. the outward manifestation of this feeling: to pay reverence.
3. a gesture indicative of deep respect; an obeisance, bow, or curtsy.

Body extension? Absolutely.

Extension of the soul? Not necessarily when testing the sword or testing the cutter. Obviously each practitioner will have an interpretation unique to themselves. I don't extend my soul into an object made for use until I have used that object....and hard.

That is SO TRUE. Great point my man.

Did the basic grinds today, It's taking a lot of work as expected. I can't wait for my Beaumont grinder to come in and then I can really get cracking. I'm rocking a crappy 3rd horsepower 27 inch belt/wheel combo right now with some pretty terrible belts, so when the new ceramic stuff comes in I expect I'll make tons of progress. I'm thinking since I'm not meaning this less as a ceremonial weapon and more of a killing things weapon, I might convex it. Either that or I'll just do like they normally are and do a full flat zero grind. I don't see why I would mess with perfection... tho that is the entire point of this project lol.

I know this is blasphemy, but I personally don't give a damn about the cultural or religious significance of the katana, I just want a weapon that will kill something when I need it to. That's why I'm building it, and why I'm not totally beholdent to the traditional katana. I mean yes, I respect the fact that the japanese love their katana's, but when I need a sword, it's a damn good design and I'm going to go pray over it before I take it into combat. I want to strap it on my back with a kydex and carry it as a backup to my rifle for "zombies".

Some of the most ridiculous crap I've read on this particular forum. Not to mention I think you will be amazingly disappointed by the performance of titanium.

Usually why I hold off even posting on the subject with this kind of intro, but I couldn't resist....it's like watching a fat girl in a tank top eat a chocolate ice cream cone....icky but compelling at the same time.

Real Nice

Your lack of respect for those that do respect what the Japanese Katana symbolizes to some is kinda weak you could of left out that last few lines iMHO.

But good luck making your video game sword

that is weak sauce:thumbdn:
Thought this was going somewhere.

I was not going to post in this thread at all, but you finally tripped my trigger.

When you started this thread you received some well meaning cautions about your choice of materials, and you blew all of those off in what I thought was a far less than courteous way.

Then you continued to beat a dead horse about a subject very few if any found of any interest, (mostly because most thought the idea might not end well for you.....as in a faulty concept).

Then you sort of wind things up by insulting those who do hold the Katana and its associated legends and practices in some degree of reverence.

My opinion of you now is that you are a Mall Ninja pure and simple. I further hope, for your sake that you do bend or break the sword, before some one who does know how to use one takes it away from you and inserts it in your rectum.

that's all for now.

Best Regards,

Paul

Edited to add: No, at age 77 I'm not the one who would do the insertion......but I have a couple of young buddies who are trained and more than capable.

Thank you Paul... I literally LAUGHED OUT LOUD at the end of your post. :D

As for the OP... I think he must be a teenager that doesn't understand or respect the caliber of knife/sword enthusiasts he's dealing with in this forum.
