Would it be crazy spend more on a customization than I spent on the Knife?

I have an orange Kershaw Packrat that I love most things about. The ergonomics, the lockup, the orange G-10, the deployment are all great. Not crazy at all about the factory grind and am considering sending it to Tom Krein to have him do his wonderful re-grind work that everybody raves about

The fee would be $45 for the work plus $10 Shipping and handling. It would cost me $5 to send it in a flat rate box for a total of $60.00.

I find myself wondering about if I have lost my mind as I am seriously considering spending $60 modifying a knife I paid $50 for :D

Anyone else spend more mod'ing/customizing a knife than the paid for the knife?

I have not done that . But hey , if you're going to keep that knife and be alot more happy with it , why not ? It's your money and being happy with your main knife to me is an important thing .

HOLD MY BEER AND WATCH THIS !

if that will make you like and use more of the knife in question, i say why not.
though i paid a lot less for my knives regrinds, i'm sure i would have paid even more.

Would I put $100 Wilkins G10 scales on a Mini Grip I paid $60?

Why yes. Yes I would.

Spending a little more to make a knife that much more functional makes perfect sense if it's worth it to you. I've spent $60 to put new scales on a sub-$30 Spyderco Persistence, and it makes it that much more functional.

This is definitely the wrong place to ask if it's crazy to spend a lot of money on a knife.

Unless you were going to spend big bucks to customize a Dark Ops knife, I don't imagine anyone here would ever judge you for spending any amount you want to have your knife the way you want it.

Make yourself happy.

Your reasoning makes sense, so your cost appears acceptable.

I would without hesitation. The way I see it certain knives are cheaper than others for a reason. If you want to make them better you are going to have to spend money. In some cases it will cost more than you paid. If you want to get real crazy you could start getting blades made for knives in better steel than the factory offers. :D

Go buy a $110.00 knife you like the grind on and sell the one you have.

This is my thought as well. With so many models of quality knives available, I'd only spend money on customizatoin if the knife in question had sentimental value or was just "perfect" except for the mods. If I thought the mods would result in a holy grail type knife for me, then sure. If it were anything less than that, I'd simply sell it and buy a more suitable model.

Its not unreasonable at all. For the past few weeks I have been fighting with myself wether or not to upgrade the sheath and scales on my Becker BK-7. I would be adding around $100 worth of stuff to a $70 knife. I finally decided to go for it. It was a fight I was happy to lose.

Spend 85$ on custom scales and $35 on a custom sheath for a 62$ Becker BK-2. Would do it again in a heartbeat.

I've always thought that it's pretty normal to spend lots on customization just because it gives you the personalized feel. I think having a knife that feels like it belongs to you is almost priceless.

I have done that with a few SPyderco Delica and Endura models. I like them better than many knives costing twice the cost of these knives and the regrind. I recommend a full flat grind to 0.010" behind the edge.

Everyone needs to answer these questions for themselves.

Depending on how some people value of their time, I think many would agree they have put WAY over the value of a knife into customizing it.

ask a becker fan how much they spend. new sheath scales strip patina hehe yes its worth it
