Would you be OK with paying $300 for a folder that looks like this?

I haven't heard anything at all good about Jason Brous or "Brous Blades". Everything...I mean EVERYTHING has been bad. You couldn't pay me to use or carry one of his knives.

That's crap. Kizer cutlery which most knives are half that price looks more finished. I had a necker once that was made by him and the satin finish was uneven and the sheath was made out of .060 kydex and the seams were rough.

What's crazy is that I posted a question just like the op in this thread concerning ZT (who subsequently fixed the problem) and ghe thread was moved poste haste out of the general knife discussion. Why is it ok to show defective workmanship on a Brous knife in general discussion but not ZT?

By the way, I'd have been upset paying 300 bucks for a knife looking like that.

Looks a little rough, but I've seen worse. However if I had paid that price, I'd be a little pissed. I just don't know if I'd be pissed enough to send it back.

Unless that was a cheap kit knife, then the OP definitely did not get anywhere near his money's worth. If I bought that knife, I wouldn't be mad, I would be steam-shooting-out-my-ears fuming. My Kizer I just bought was $100 and even with the out of box problems (somewhat weak detent, washers needing polished, every screw being red loctited) after a simple hour of work I got a knife that is better in almost every conceivable way. If you wouldn't be mad at this, share whatever you are on, because that is some good stuff.

Huh? Seriously?

I have read so many mixed reviews about Brous Blades that I was torn for a while - but I decided to get a SS flipper. The knife is perfect, FF was flawless, and it was centered.
All that aside, I do feel for the OP - you spend a lot of $$ on a knife, the anticipation builds up, you get it, and.....that.

Many of the stories I read though had one common factor - most of them contacted Brous himself and were very happy with the resolution. Seems like most of the time he sends out a personally inspected replacement rather than fix whatever it is you send in. Just a suggestion.

I've heard of other brous blades having horrible fit and finish problems but being taking care of immediately after Jason being notified about the problem. I dont know how they even get out the door but he seems to be taking care of the problems as they come up.

I agree with others who feel the condition of OP's knife does not meet the price tag. Having said that, I have a Brous Mini Division that, upon close inspection, had a few small nicks on the inside of the steel liners on the back of the handle at the bottom in the area of the pocket clip, though not nearly as pronounced or numerous as the knife pictured. I did question whether a knife at this price point should have these, and it probably should not. But other than these very small nicks, I was very happy with everything else about the knife, i.e. the blade condition, centering, lock-up, and the flipping action. For me, mine was not in such a condition that I would return it, though I may still send it in to be smoothed out. I have read a lot of great things about Brous and his knives, as well as his taking care of any problems with his knives. I will probably still buy a Reloader at some point when the funds are available, and would not write off the maker based on my (admittedly limited) inspection of his work at this point. But glad it worked out for OP with another brand, as there are some great makers and knives in that price range.

My Division folder is awesome.. I carry it all the time..

The bionic I had, was horrible.. jimping hurt my little fingies!

The triple threat I have, is a mix.. I've learned to enjoy it after sanding some things myself. The liner lock where it meets the tang is a bit wonky... The clip is horrible. The blade is super nice, came sharp with an even edge. I made it really sharp though.. G10 on this one was very clean.

The SS neckers I've had and have are all good. Love em. If you want a never or small belt carry, check out the SS ranger. It is my favorite and only one I have left. Kydex with clip is great.

So Brous blades.. I think the poor quality knives are getting more attention than the good ones. Most people complain, rather than compliment. This is true from grade school til death...

Maybe Brous blades does have a higher number of poor f&f knives. Some design flaws. But I don't think it's as bad as everyone says. I've had 4 folders, and 3 neckers. Only one really sucked. The small issues aren't deal breakers otherwise.

I wouldn't call it hit or miss.

The people that claim they would never buy one, well, your loss. :) I'd never buy many other makers knives I've seen due to just pure ugliness and horrible choice of materials :) Each to their own.

I also have a Division Flipper in Carbon Fiber. It. Is. Perfect. No joke. Absolutely flawless.

That being said, it seems obvious that these "inferior" knives are being made at a different place and/or by different folks. Definitely don't accept anything until you've had a chance to personally inspect it.

I believe in giving a new/little guy a chance in the market place. However - not at those prices! In fact, I wouldn't accept the op's knife at gratis!! It really shouldn't have made it into a box. I guess that is why I buy from a local store... I can inspect my purchase prior to paying for it. I'm glad you had a good vendor who would exchange it, too.

Everything? Just on this forum alone there are several posts concerning Brous knives, and they are far from entirely negative. Again, I agree the OP's knife should have never made it out of the shop and into his hands in that condition. I think that is true of some examples of any brand. But this does obviously happen. As long as it is made right, to the buyer's satisfaction, then it is a good resolution. Having said that, I also do not think it is unreasonable to expect superior workmanship in a knife at this price point, and not have the anticipation of receiving your knife blunted once in hand, and then having to wait again for resolution of the problem. Then again, I am not the most patient person in the world!
