Would you buy knives if you weren't allowed to carry them?

As the title says, would you buy knives the way you do now if you wouldn't be allowed to bring them outside your home, other than when going camping etc?

Here in Sweden we aren't allowed to carry a knife on your person when being out in public! Unless we carry it for a certain reason, like being a craftsman of some sort and are using the knife in our work. But even then you might get in "trouble" with the law! If you are going to town for food etc you should leave the knife in your car, and preferably not in the driver area but in the trunk or somewhere you can't reach it when being in the car. It's not allowed to drive around with a knife in your car either...
Remember, this is what the law says! Most cops don't run around and check these things all the time! But IF they for some reason interact with you, and they find a knife on your person or in your car, they can according to the law give you trouble for it! Sending you to court for a trial, and probably ending up loosing the knife and paying the penalty fees...

Often it's up to the policeman on scene to make a ruling about the knife, I have heard a lot of different stories (confirmed true) that would chock you! It's not only knives that goes under the "knife law" here, anything that can be considered as a weapon you intend to do harm to others falls under the same law. So if you have a object that don't have any particular use and are formed as a small bat/baton it's considered forbidden to carry out in public. A one-hand opened knife that locks in open position are worse than a SAK etc. Just because it's easier to open quick and more safe or something to use as a weapon.
It's up to the policeman to decide if they think you are planing to use the knife as weapon to hurt someone, which they mostly think! Why else would you possibly be needing a knife?!
And forget to whip out the knife in public, or in the wrong place, people will look at you and think you are a criminal or a murder! :S
I might be a bit harsh, but that's the reaction I mostly get when using a knife outside my home, and the reactions have been from people I know, that's why I have been comfortable using my knife when it's only people I know around...But even then I get strange looks and comments about it! Even carrying things like bandages in your wallets have given me some reactions from people. You are strange if you aren't unprepared for daily occurrences that most of us on this forums are prepared for!

Anyway, the thing is, that our laws regarding carrying a knife on your person really sucks! I can see why some people shouldn't carry a knife, or that you don't bring a knife when going out drinking, dancing etc.
But I mean, come on! Law abiding citizens that gets thrilled over opening a package just so you get to use your new knife isn't someone they should haul of to jail!

It really bums me out that I can't carry my knives with me, using them as they are intended to, opening stuff (NOT something living! ;) ), peeling your apple and so on.
I'm to concerned getting in trouble and loosing my knife, to bring it with me. And just using it in your home, fiddling with it when watching tv just isn't a worthy life for any knife!
And I buy new knives rather often, but lately I have been thinking that I should stop because of our stupid law! Of course you could bring the knife anyway, and be very careful when and where you use it, but I don't want to worry about that I might get caught someday...

So, would you still buy knives knowing that you are forbidden by law to bring it outside your home??

Ok, I probably should have mentioned that the kind of knives I meant was edc like knives, folders in particular. Not kitchen knives...

Yes, its a hobby that I enjoy and thats all that matters. I am curious what the punishment would be for such a "heinous" crime.

Hi SpyJ,

It's nice to meet you. I really like a lot of things about Sweden and Swedish culture (trying at the moment to add the language to my repertoire in fact).

I wanted to say I feel bad for you, I don't know how it must feel for a user/collector of knives to not be able to carry them most everywhere. I'd love to spend time in Sweden but I'd feel bad not being able to go out "fully dressed" as it were.

Like I say though, I like a lot about Sweden, it's language and filmography (and of course Mora knives!) particularly. We should chat sometime.

I`m taking my chance and break the law most of the time. I do however consider carefully what I carry, and since I`m into slipjoints and SAKs I feel safe there. I belive it`s my personal right and freedom to carry a knife as a tool and no draconic laws can stop me.

No problem! I enjoy many things at home that I cannot do out in public, so I would include owning/buying/carrying knives among them.

No. The main reason I don't have a bali is because I don't want to deal with the carry laws on them. They're my favorite type of folder but I don't own one. My knives see work so I'm not really into buying knives just to look at them while on the couch at home.

Yes they are better to collect then stamps and a gift to pass down. Also they are tools. I like to spend good money for my tools and try new styles and designs.

Swede here too..
I have two small kids and I find myself constantly using
whatever knife I have with me. And I almost always have one.
I'm trying to get in to the police academy so maybe its stupid of me
to carry one. You guys would cry over the laws they are pushing for
here regarding firearms too..

Whereabouts are you SpyJ? Uppsala here..

I would move out of the country. :p

Ok, a little more serious...I think I would still have some knives however I might have more fixed blades and less folders. The reason I prefer folders is b/c I get to use them more often on a daily basis. If I could only carry them essentially at home they might not appeal to me as much. Who knows though. Stinky law...

In the U.S., the ability to carry a knife and the length of the knife varies greatly from state to state. Even with certain states, the ability to carry a knife can be different from city to city depending on that particular State's Constitution. I would still collect, but I might be more targeted with the areas I would focus on.... it's not fun having something that is only a knick knack and only collects dust. :-0)

If I wasn't allowed to carry them unless camping or job, I would have no more than six knives. Three folding and three fixed.

My first thought was switch blade knives... I own a few but they are illegal to carry in my state. But to really answer your question, I would probably buy fewer knives if they were illegal to carry outside your home. I can't see myself not carrying a SAK regardless of the law, but that is a judgement I would have to make when it happens.

Since I don't know the laws in Sweden, how do they feel about carrying a firearm?

Wow those laws sound terrible, I guess it's in their best interest to seem as "civilized" as possible

I would not buy knives if that was the case here

I would own less, but not get rid of all of them. One of my favorite knives (mora companion ) comes from your country,
it's sad you can't carry it legally.........
