So, I was playing around at the Kydex forge (toaster oven) the other day, had a couple of scrap pieces and no knives to use them on, so ended up making a couple of sheaths for folding knives...

... which leads me to the question... would you carry a folding knife as a "neck knife"? If so, open or closed?

I know for me, sometimes a pocket isn't always convenient or accessible... there are other reasons, but I'd be curious to hear yours, or if you'd even do it.

Making these just sparked my curiosity.

Ive seen this before. Except the sheath opened the knife when drawn from it.

If it's something that didn't have a clip I might consider it as I can't stand carp banging around in my pockets.

I don't like things hanging on my neck anyways, so this would be a no. Pockets are much more convenient.

I do not carry a neck knife when in the "civilized" world but will sometimes carry one when on a hike or when working around the house. These are usually small fixed blades (6" oal) but would consider carrying a folder in this manner.

As far as opened or closed, it depends on the knife. If the oal when open is less than 7" then yes, opened. Other wise, I would want it closed

I tried carrying a small fixed blade as a neck knife and just can't get used to it except under very limited circumstances like kayaking/canoeing. I switched to carrying a knife in the kayak scenario on my life vest. So, I doubt I would carry a folder that way if I have pockets available.

I bought this AFCK years ago and it came with a kydex neck sheath. I never carried it this way because I never had a real reason or opportunity because I always have pockets, but under some circumstances I would carry it. I've thought about how I could make a sheath that would allow for easy one-handed re-sheathing.

For me, no. I don't like neck knives. I don't like stuff hanging around my neck in general. If I had to carry a folder around my neck for some reason, it would be something like this: https://agrussell.com/knife/FeatherLite-One-Hand-Knife--K-93C10. Only 1.5oz plus a minimal amount for the sheath.

I have that A.G. Russell that G. Scott H. mentioned and it works well for me. I normally only carry it when I don't have pockets, like when I'm wearing sweats and a t-shirt. It is light enough that it isn't very noticeable and it is a great slicer.

I wouldn't carry any kind of knife as a neck knife, folding or otherwise.

I have owned neck knives, but NEVER carried them. Sold them. Finally found the alternative that I wear all day, every day.
Bradford Guardian3 in CPM-3V or M390. PERFECT.

Reaching up my shirt, then grabbing an object, then flipping out a blade just to open an envelope..... Its not worth it for a folder. Its only practical in my world for a small fixed blade. I actually think its a little much to hang any knives from my neck, but then again i'm not a necklace guy and always have pockets on me...for my pocket knives

I did carry a Pete Atwood folder in a kydex neck sheath, around my neck, for many years. I wore it primarily to wear at work, under my scrubs at a hospital in Boston. It what I needed to do at the time, and I did not have my Begg Tree Frog yet; I was still looking for one.

I'll say yes - closed

I wouldn't normally carry a neck knife, but I could see carrying a small folder as one under certain circumstances. Something in a 2" or 2.5" blade would be much smaller than a fixed necker in the same size blade. It would have to be extremely light for it's size though. Maybe a Spydie Delica or such.

Years ago, when I was riding dirt bikes, long before anyone heard of putting a clip on a folder, I'd keep a knife in my tool-roll I kept attached to the back fender. Was always a bit of a hassle to get to quickly. And riding gear, back then, didn't have any pockets. Occasionally one of us would have a boot knife shoved in a boot, but riding boots aren't exactly designed to hold a knife either. I could see a 1/2 oz Delica as a necker being really handy back then.

Same goes for a mountain bike. Or kayaking. Or any number of other activities. The compactness of a folder, relative to a comparable fixed blade, might make quite a good argument for it. Again, as long as it's really light for its size.

Get one of those safety lanyards that snap/detach when you tug hard. Don't need a sheath that way.
