I was aproached buy a guy in my apartment building who wanted a cigarette and when I said "no" the dude pulled out a great big blade.....well naturally I ran and called the police thinking I had done the right thing.....but the police didnt react the way I expected ....they could have got the guy coz they got there so quick but all they did was interegate me for 2 hours trying to get me to confess that I was dealing drugs

I been collecting knives all my life....but since that night I decided to start carrying one coz "hey" the damn cops are useless....and I figure if anyone pulls that stunt on me again I aint gonna waste my time being a victom and getting accused of being a criminal so I might as well stab the next ******* that pulls a knife on me.

If you do that you will likely be spending a lot more time with the police being interrogated for killing a poor guy trying to bum a smoke. While I don't always agree with the things police do, or how they do them, you just have to live with it.

I would think that part of the problem with your situation is that it is just your word against his. You tell the police he tried to stab you, he tells them your dealing drugs. Who should they believe? They don't know either of you, I would guess.

Also saying in a public forum that you are going to stab the next person that pulls a knife on you probably isn't the best idea. If you ever find yourself in a position where you really do need to stab someone, it could be viewed as a premeditated act, no longer self-defense.

I think your story depends a lot on the situation you were in. Were you dealing drugs?

No, I wouldn't stab anybody, but I might slice their arm off with my Mall Ninja Death Dealing Katana, if they dissed my girlfriend or one of my homies! :D :D

Just dont call the pigs next time and you will have no problems !!!!! ;)

Heck yea Id stab em! If them bears didnt wanna help, you have to take care of yourself.
You could just get a CONCOY!( sorry, I couldnt help myself!)

Asking politely for a cigarette is one thing. Threatening with a deadly weapon is another. When your opponent pulls a knife and demands a cigarette, the situation goes from pan-handling to armed robbery. The fact that the article involved, a cigarette, is trivial doesn't matter. To threaten someone's life and demand that they give you their property -- no matter how trivial -- is armed robbery.

A person who would escalate from pan-handling to armed robbery, who would demand a cigarette at knife point, who would use deadly force to get a smoke, is not sane or rational. You have no idea what a person in that mental condition with a knife will do to you even if you give him the whole pack and your wallet too. This is definitely a red-alert self-defense situation.

"Rush a gun and run from a knife", I can't remember where that quote comes from, but if you think about it...there is a good bit of sense to it.

Read the attached linkHarvard self defense/murder case

Young people should walk away if you can, I've been in many fights in my youth, some didn't turn out well for either side, my Dad whose been dead now for almost 30 years always told me as a kid,

" Never start a fight, but if one starts make sure you finish it."

"Make sure no one walks away from a fight unless it's you."

"Finish fast, finish first, the longer your involved, the better your chances of getting hurt."

"There's no such thing as a fair fight."

"What are you stupid? Never give someone the first punch."

And my favorite was, "There ain't no winners in a fight, just different degrees of losers."

Sometimes knowing enough to protect yourself in a knife fight is just enough to get convicted for Manslaughter or even worse Murder in the 1st degree.

BTW posts like this can and will be used by the Prosecuting Attorney as evidence of premeditation should something go wrong,".......but since that night I decided to start carrying one coz "hey" the damn cops are useless....and I figure if anyone pulls that stunt on me again I aint gonna waste my time being a victom and getting accused of being a criminal so I might as well stab the next ******* that pulls a knife on me."

Which leads me to another of my Dad's favorite quotes,"...only and idiot tells someone what they're gonna do next in a fight,"I'm gonna punch you in the nose", just do it, don't brag about it."

GoldCutter please don't take offense to my comments they are just meant to illustrate the futility of taking on an aggressor even with proper training.

Would I ever stab somebody? In a heartbeat, if it was necessary. If I truly felt like my life was in danger and I had no other way to escape the situation, I would not hesitate to defend myself with whatever means were available to me. In your situation, you got away easily. So what if the cops were not very helpful. You're alive, you're not in jail, and you still have cigarettes. Be thankful for the small things.

You know I remember a very similar post about a knife and a cigarette...mmmmm

I wonder ............

I would do what was necessary to defend myself or anyone else that was being attacked. If that meant that I had to stab someone then that is what I would do. I would worry about the consequences later.

In your situation running was the right thing to do. If there is the possibility of escape and you decide to stab the person instead, there is a good chance that you will end up being charged with manslaughter. The only time violence is accepted as a defence is when it was the only option available to you.

If he pulled a weapon, I would
If he had a weapon, I would
If he was in the process of making a weapon, I would
If he had the raw materials, I would
If he beat his wife and kids, I would
If he was linked to, however tenuously, to anybody who commited a violent crime, I would.
Of course I wouldn't leave his family high and dry...
I would move in to his home and take over as husband and father, and maintain his lucrative grocery store, At least until I found someone suitable to take over for me.
Yes, in the meantime I know that my own family's needs may be neglected but I know I'm keeping them safe.
Yes, as expected I'll meet some resistance by some members of the family, I'll have to put them down too.
I know this sounds crazy and maybe even illegal but if the law won't do anything about it, I will!
Eventually I would let my new wife select her own head of house hold but I'll keep my eye on her choice in case she makes the wrong decision, because of course, I know what's best for the safety of my family.

1) You were threatened.
2) You got away unharmed.

So what's the problem?

3) The police didn't believe you.

How old are you, where do you live, what might have made the police suspicious of you?

When did this happen? If it's recent, and the answers to my last questions are 'old enough, decent neighborhood, nothing substantive' then go to the police station and talk to a supervisor.

Best bet -- back off, trust no one, move someplace more reliable when you can. Don't plan on stabbing someone. The first rule of self-defense is to leave the area of conflict. It worked the first time, didn't it? He had a knife but you didn't get cut.

No way. My expensive, tactical knives are strictly for slicing apples and opening boxes.

No way! And risk catching hepatitis or HIV! That's why I use throwing knives. I train to throw far enough away so that the blood of my enemy won't splatter on me. :)
