Would you use a harsey folder or safequeen it?

First thing first - yes it will lose value big time once you put an edge on it or scratches it. No way around that. If you need a fine slicing knife I won’t use the SHF. It’s too thick behind the edge. I reprofied mine so it cuts decent now. If you need a hard use knife then go for it.

I know how you feel, I recently bought a SHF with the watchworks engraving and anodizing. I haven't used it yet to be honest, I'm not sure if I will at the moment. It's the anodizing that makes us feel like this I think. I carry a couple different Sebenzas regularly and don't have that feeling from them, but like you said, you can always get them refinished. Plus they're just sand blasted Ti, which actually looks better with scratches.

I'd be extremely surprised if Spartan would re-anodize your knife for free, that's asking a lot of a company. I do know that they do a little bit of customization for their customers, so you may be able to pay them to re-do it. I'd love to carry mine all the time and give her a patina but I have so many other knives that I already carry and that are already scratched up that it just feels nice to keep her super pretty for the time being. Ya never know when I'll change my mind though because they are amazing knives.
Nice!! Yeah I kept going back amd forth with the watchworks and the Sparta babe. The watchworks just looked so much more classy to me. I hate to day it but naked ladies and skulls always has a gas stations knife feel to it to me. But after examining them both uo close I had to go with the Sparta babe it's just so well done and intricate. I really appreciate your input! Makes me feel better knowing others share my thoughts process!

I don't subscribe to the safe queen concept, but I'm not exactly harsh on my knives, with only a couple of exceptions.

Another difference between SHF and CRK is market history. CRK has stood the test of time, and proved to be a brand with longevity and collectability. SHF may get there, but hasn't yet. Making keeping an SHF as an investment even more risky. I'd say use it and love it. Life is short. And someday everything we love will end up in a landfill anyway.

I personally would not use it, the art ones are art knives to me. But if you like the design, I'd get a plain one for using.

That being said, it's unlikely it will ever be worth more than you paid, so you shouldn't worry about depreciation. It already did that when you bought it.

If you bought it to resell it in 2 decades leave it in the safe. If you plan to keep it then use it. If you plan to use it than every scratch is your story. In my book I would proudly carry and use it. What you have to consider is who you let handle or use it.

Edit to add if you are spending $600 to invest buy gold

If you're doing so as a long-term hedge against inflation or collapse of the USD, then yes, eventually that may pay off if you can wait for upturns in the gold market to cash out. But if the SHTF and you want to trade even a whole wheelbarrow load of gold for the last box of MREs within 50 miles of here, then there's the door and keep your hands in plain view until you're out of range.

;)

I agree with you on knives (and guns, and other tools), I buy them because I enjoy using them.

I learned long ago if your buying for inflation and possible trade it's hard to beat ammunition.

I really like the Sparta babe design, I think I like it a little more than the watchworks. I also really like the Runes one, and the fir tree one for a more subtle look too. You made a good choice. I only got the watchworks, or any of them for that matter, because I got a really good deal on it used in perfect condition.

My suggestion is to buy used knives. I've only bought less than a handfull of new from the dealer knives in the passed year and a half. I run into this same problem a lot of times when I do, where I just hate putting on the first scratches in case I want to sell it later. Now I search the used market and find one for less money that's already got just enough scratches to where it can't be sold as NIB, that way I can feel comfortable carrying and using it off the jump.

^this. It WILL get scratched up eventually, they’re only new once.
Lots of folks will say you’re a crazy fool if you don’t use it….
But check out the for sale section ;-)
More than half the stuff there has never cut anything or even been carried.
Some people drive their classic cars, some people trailer them from show to show.
Whatever makes YOU happy, it’s your money.

You can either enjoy it just by handling it and using it sparingly or enjoy it every day using it. The choice is yours. there is no wrong answer.
Don’t be concerned about the value of the knife, what makes a knife valuable is the pleasure you get from it every time you use/admire it.
I know from experience that if you make it a safe queen and never use it, it’s easier to move it along because the knife is valuable but not valuable to you. If that makes sense.

Personally, I like to carry and use my knives. I enjoy them much more in my pocket or in my hand then when they’re in the box or on my shelf.

I normally carry more than one knife with me, so if I’m carrying something special like a Sebenza or an SHF, then I’m likely to use the cheaper one I’m carrying for anything dirty or rough on the blade.

That said, buying another as a backup is a fine option too. I just picked up another SHF 3.25 Storm Watch because I wanted to carry one without worrying about keeping it in pristine condition.

I carry mine and enjoy it greatly. Great ergos and a workhorse of a knife. I have the fir tree edition and I'm pleased with how everything has held up to use. I don't baby it but don't senselessly abuse it either.

It's been back to spartan twice and their CS has been good and quick. 1st was poor action when new, they swapped out washers and that fixed things. 2nd time was the lock needed adjustment as it was loose from wearing in. They covered shipping both ways and I think it only sat in their hands for 2 days.

Use it, since you have several knives already, rotate them, keeps the wear down on them individually. Also could be a good excuse to carry two. Use the second one in cases where you think you might damage the good one, or if someone wants to borrow it.

I’d use it.

I think knives share some similarities with cars. I love using both much more than admiring them.

I read a quote once about cars that I think applies here. To paraphrase: “Keeping your sports car in the garage to keep up its value instead of driving it is like not having sex with your girlfriend so she’ll be better for the next guy”. ;)

It's a tool, use it. Maybe if it were one of those $40k William Henry's would I consider a safe queen. Then again, I'd never spend that much on a knife even if I had it.

I use every knife I have, from my $35 sak to $500 Biryukov.

I went thru the same agony when I bought my first SHF (God and Country). Bought it to use and yet it sat in a display case because I enjoyed looking at it & didn‘t want the finish “compromised“. So then I bought a Fir Tree….same situation. And yes, SHF’s are tough, user knives and it’s kind of silly to have them sitting on the shelf. However, the limited edition knives do hold their value rather well and I liked looking at them! So I bought a used PJ SHF as my EDC and kept the others in pristine condition, which relieved my anxiety associated with the ”limiteds”.
Finally, one day I woke up and realized the “rabbit hole” I’d gone down simply relative to a couple of pocket knives. If I wasn’t going to sell ‘em I might as well be experiencing the enjoyment of actually using them. The anxiety’s gone, I still love the knives and they’ve become handsome, useful tools.

My advice: Get your enjoyment thru the everyday use of a high quality, tough yet beautiful tool.

Im more likely to use my higher end knives. I don’t have a spartan but I imagine the most you’d lose in resale even well used would be $100.

Someone one told me , $100 is cheap education. You’d spend that in a night having beers with your friends. That knife will give you years of enjoyment the more you use it.

Plus they look better well loved

Would you actually ever sell it for the value to be of concern? If flipping knives for money is the goal there are much better options. You obviously chose this one because you personally liked it. I say use it. And if you want to go hard on it, get a backup or a plain one for a beater.
This! If you aren't going to sell it maintaining value is completely irrelevant. That said I would probably have the same worries about dinging it up. Wonder how I am going to solve that problem myself since I want to get the A-10 version.
