Would you use a limited edition Knife?

Hi ben317 -

Yes - I do use my "limited edition" knives.

If they are truly desirable, then a little normal use will not negatively impact the value of the knife.

The key is the desirability more so than the limited number produced.

Use it, don't abuse it and never lose it!

Sure, why not use it?You could drop anytime, might as well enjoy what you have.Whoever inherits it from you probably won't appreciate it as much.Or they will sell it for half of what it's worth, just saying.

Yup. Granted my CPM M4 Spyderco Military aint exactly expensive compared to a limited Sebenza or something. But it is definitely "limited edition" and expensive enough for most normal folk. But I didn't leave home without that thing for months after I got it.

AH! I found this thread very refreshing! I am a collector only on the level that I have a fair amount of knives - but I carry ALL of them at some point. I don't care how limited it is - and I use them. My favorite carry has been for a LONG TIME my Microtech D/A Socom - its beaten up and used hard, and thats what it's for.

My latest carries have been either the gray "Navy Seal" Microtech Scarab (god this knife is cool...) or a Darrel Ralph "Trigger Maze" (unassisted). The more I play with the trigger maze the more amazed I am with it...

next on my list, probably a Brian Tighe "Nirk Tighe". Still eagerly waiting for my DEMKO....

These "should I use it?" threads are always the same: unanimous replies of "go for it" - "I use all of my knives" - "what good is it if it just sits in drawer?" etc., yet the vast majority of the thousands of knives offered for sale on the Exchange are "never used, carried or sharpened." What gives?

Either none of those sellers reply to these threads, or people are blowing a lot of smoke ;). It's easy to tell someone else to use their rare or expensive knife. Not so easy if scratching up the finish and taking a hit on the value dampens your enjoyment of that particular piece.

I'm both a knife collector (the horror!) and a knife user, and I've realized that I only need so many tools that do pretty much the same thing before they become hopelessly redundant. But I keep buying knives. What to do!?

I've accepted the fact that a nice knife can offer a lot of enjoyment while being admired and maintained in new condition. I've been collecting for over thirty years and my tastes have changed direction many times. Part of the fun for me is selling the stuff I've grown tired of -- usually for a modest profit -- and "reinvesting" those resources back into my collection. And I still have more redundant EDCs than I can realistically use.

I'd use it. Then again it's a Sebenza. Limited or not, it's not like it's a hand made custom knife.

FWIW, I'd use a custom knife too.

EDIT: BTW, I meant none of the above as disrespectful.

If you're investing or collecting I wouldn't use it. If you just like knives then go for it.

Would you use an expensive limited edition Sebenza? Or would you just keep it as a collectors item? I have a beautiful knife that was pretty dang expensive but what's the point of having a knife that just sits in a drawer and looks pretty?

sure, use 'em. knives are made to be use
just don't baton or pry with it ;)

If I really like it then I'd use it, but with care ofcourse.

Its a shame to have a limited for example a M390 Benchmade as a safe queen, the knife steel is designed for hard use, not just to look at.

I only can't bring myself to use older discontinued / hard to find knives, its like a museum piece to me, only if they were used previously I'd use them.

Hi Rick -

You answered your own question.

I have a limited edition Sebenza 21 with inlays, I use it. I have a limited edition Benchmade Ritter M4 Grip, I use it. I have a limited edition Spyderco / Knifeworks M4 Military, I use it.

I have a lot of knives that rarely get used - as I too am a collector.

One could put myriad different pretenses on the OP's question and come to different conclusions, but, in general - use the thing.

One thing to remember is that if something is MADE to be COLLECTIBLE, the item will rarely ever be truly valuable. In general. ;^)

No safe queens here. I guess all Benchmades are LE's - they change their lineup regularly. If you really like a current BM offering, better find a spare!

One of my favorite knives is a LE Kershaw Volt. Less than 300 made and the price has already doubled on these. But I carry it anyway. I'll admit that it doesn't see much more work than cutting an ocassional string, or slicing some paper, so no really nothing harsh, but I love ti carry it anyway!
