Would you want a Spyderco/Benchmade TACTICAL SAK?

First of all: I wouldn´t buy. Mainly because of the same reasons, Buzzbait has mentioned.

As for a non corkscrewed SAK with different scales: There is a extra serie, guess it is called "Soldier Line" or something, where everything is made beefier without a cork screw.

Mystery steel? Wasn´t it always 1.4110 (440A like) at 55 to 56 HRC? Always for decades? I mean, that is a bit more precise than INFI or Carbon V, isn´t it?

A SAK with a 30 lumen (AA) LED, 3", ATS-34 Axis locking blade, G10 scales, scissors, (I assume you want a couple screwdrivers- a phillips perhaps) and a saw would be about the size of a good stapler, weigh about a pound, cost around $200 (at least) and be ridiculous. It would need one of those cool spring-loaded carbide- tip glass breakers, a blasting cap crimper, Glock armorer's tool, 1911 bushing wrench and a seatbelt cutter too. THEN it would be tactical. If you could somehow work a fully functional .357 revolver into it, and a GPS navigator (and maybe add a shoulder strap) I would definitely buy one!

I remember walking the backyard at Versailles with my then GF, finding a bench to have a picnic lunch, breaking out a bottle of bordeaux and using the corkscrew in my SAK to open it -- so yeah, the corkscrew can be a critical survival tool. Then I used the mystery steel to cut the cheese, the edge didn't fold over or chip. What a great spot for lunch. . . I find the Vic Outrider to be a great tool for many things. Upgrading the large locking blade from 440 steel to CPM 154 would be great, but not necessary.

You guys are more traditionalistic than I thought. I suppose I should eat my usual moldy bread and cheese lunch, right after I crap in a hole (wiping with my left of course) and fill some holes in my thatch roof.

JK, but I am supprised by how many of you would not change a single thing about the SAK. I guess that really says something about what they have made! I did find a SAK called the Trekker, and though it is an unusual SAK, it still has the cross and shield on the side. If any of you have the Trekker, could you tell me how pocketable it is, and how is the blade lock. Thank you for your replies.

Well michael, I think the cliché Don't fix what isn't broken fits nicely here.

With SAKs as they are, I have not personally encountered any knife situation where they've failed to preform what needed to be done, that would be capable of a similar sized modern, tactical folder. I've done any kitchen chore you can imagine, constructed shelters from scratch, batoned with the main blades, made wood shavings for hundreds of fires, carved spoons and cups, cut apart shoes to salvage the materials, opened cans of food, crafted smoking pipes out of beer cans, cleaned and filed my nails to keep them short for guitar playing, trimmed my mustache, opened my friends beer etc.

I think they are the most capable knifes currently on the market, bar none. When you consider other aspects of Victorinox, such as their affordable prices and legendary quality control, I think you realize how much of a great service the company continually offers. It's ironic that so many knife nuts scoff at the Swiss Army Knife on these forums. They slice a hell of a lot better than the 400$ sharpened pry-bars most people carry. But who uses a knife to cut things these days? ;)

I think the old SAK has already been pushed about as far as it can go. I could go for nicer scales, I suppose, but that's really just aesthetics. Functionally, I think Wenger and Victorinox have all the bases covered.

And for the record, beer comes corked too.

I would like to put some micarta or G10 scales on one of my SAKs, like Buzzbait has. The scales are the one problem I have with SAKs as well, those micarta scales look fantastic. How do you remove the old scales, and how are the new ones attached? (I ask this before I try prying mine apart like an ape)

I like the idea a lot but:

KEEP the corkscrew

The light is a good idea, it has been used before on SAKs such as the Voyager Lite - http://www.princetonwatches.com/shop/53968.asp

However, the light is definately not 30 lumens so beefing up to 30 lumens is a good idea. AA batteries on the other hand would probably not be such a good idea because of the large amount of space they take up, it is a good idea to make sure when using coin batteries that they are readily avaiable at the local rite aid, cvs, radioshack ect.

I like the pocket clip idea. There is a pocket clip mod for SAKs somwhere on the forums, I'll see if I can find it but, this does sacrifice the tweezers (or which ever one) so an already made clip is agreat idea.

Finaly, I would love if this SAK had an axis lock but I can see that happening without taking up a lot of space (I could be wrong) so my choice for a lock mechanism would be a good old lock back.

i do a lot of sak mods, see sosak on www.knifeforums.net and have soon an meeting with "mr victorinox" and we will talk about some swissbianco sak designs, auto sak and assistent opening sak etc.

sure better materials like g10 and 2006 high quality steel for the cuttingblades is an must and also kydex edc sheaths and/or pocketclips.

point is that the swiss company are currently only interested in
technical gimmicks than putting an "better" steel blade in...after all its an knife and should cut, have an solid, grippy scales, easy edc possibility by an kydexsheath or strong clip. and an lock that isent for leftys as that linerlock is....

cross your fingers that i can move sompthing, they have the money and i the ideas....

I think a soldiers version would do well with no gimmicks - Aus8a locking 3 1/2'' blade, g10 scales, combo cap/can opener/ flat driver, Phillips driver, saw, and scissors. Pointed tweezers and a hard to remove/lose toothpick awl could be ok.
No light. Using the knife in darkness may require a light source separate and at a different perspective. There are plenty of Inova type button cell lights out there that do a better job than one mounted on the wrong end when you need it.
I like SAKs and have some - but a thin tactical clip mounted adult sized multiblade is not on the market and should be.

Why shouldn't SAKs have a clip?

Edit: Vivi you raise a good point, I meant as optional or only on certain models (I wish I could have both).

It'd be nice to see it as optional, but pocketing them always worked for me.

I do like the idea of something called an "assault knife" .... but I don't think a small swiss army type knife should qualify as a "super assault knife"

I like the idea alot.

But i Would carry a leatherman Ti charge, With a tactical fixed.

What is the intended purpose of a tactical S.A.K????

It wouldnt be a good fighter, and the leatherman is nearperfect in my mind (I can easily open it one handed using both the chicago drop and the thumb notch)

So why re-invent the wheel?

That being said i would buy and on occasion carry one in places like Kalifornia. if benchmade made it id put in the axis so you could keep the bottle opener. I dont use one but apparently alot of people do.

Victorinox scales just pop off. If you pry them gently, there's no damage to the original scale. I use 2-part epoxy to install my micarta scales.

I wish Victorinox would make the Soldier into a framelock. Since that's probably not going to happen I would love a Spyderco version of the soldier. To sell though I think it should be along the lines of a Tinker or a Soldier. Anything else would be too bulky.

I have a trekker as my edc and I love it! If I could make one small change...I would replace the toothpick with a mag stick, a flint or something to spark a fire.
