Would you want a Spyderco/Benchmade TACTICAL SAK?

It wouldn't interest me much. The SAK is fine the way it is, except for maybe the file.

The steel may not be anything mind blowing, but it does happen to be INCREDIBLY stainless, and brain-dead simple to sharpen. That is a huge deal for me.

Also, I have tried a SAK with a pocket clip. It was too darned heavy to be worth the bother. My pocket practically collapsed under the weight.

As for the corkscrew….. My corkscrew happens to hold one of the most important tools on my SAK; the eyeglass screwdriver.

That scares me more than anything. Victorinox has some of the best fit and finish of any knife company out there. Most American companies would fall flat on their bum if they had to make all of those tools fit well. Leatherman still hasn't figured it out yet, and they've been trying for many years.

I did want better scales on my SAKs, so I just made my own out of micarta.

Buzz, you are like a god among men; how did you do the slots for the toothpick and tweezers.

I have a trekker as my edc and I love it! If I could make one small change...I would replace the toothpick with a mag stick, a flint or something to spark a fire.

That's a good idea. Maybe you could craft something out of Bic lighter flints? I'd love to see this too. Even a fold-out firesteel in the handle like a normal tool would be an excellent addition to their selection of tools.

VERY CAREFULLY. They were not easy. After all of the other work was done on the scales, I used a fine grinding bit on my dremel to make the slits for the toothpick and tweezers. Some manual file work was also needed, in order to get a perfect fit. The big trick was not to accidentally fill the toothpick and tweezers slits with epoxy, when gluing on the scales.

Making SAK scales is simple. The accessory slits are not, at least for me.

Honestly. I am fine with my Vic Farmer "mystery" steel and all. I personally wouldn't buy a "tactical" SAK due to the almost certain price increase. I know it would probably come with better steel, maybe a locking blade, ect.... but I like the Vic brand and have carried one for years. Never had a problem.

I do think it would be a good idea, and am sure many would like the upgrades. Just my opinion.

I own several SAKs including a one hand opening Trekker.I like them as they are.I also love my Spydercos and the few Benchmades that I have. What I really want is the Spyderco Europa that was rumored awhile back. It's supposed to be an Endura sized knife with a corkscrew and toothpick and tweezers.YMMV.tom.

and the ever-present corkscrew (which I used one once, and it broke!)
Check out the Tinker- it has a phillips driver and is sans corkscrew.

Now the reamer/sowing awl, that can go.
Actually, I found that I use the reamer often, and not for reaming. it is a general pick, and I like have that handy.

Leatherman has sort of hit the concept of a tactical multi-purpose folder and I don't care for them that much. I probably would not buy one regardless of maker.

Also, I don't like the concept of putting a flashlight on my knife- seems a little too Frost'ish to me.

I think the whole point of a Tac SAK is the size: a 3 1/2" blade. If not 4", which means a reasonable size for tactical jobs, where it could approach the sharpened prybar role just as tactical knives do.

Large pivot pins, 1/4" stock, virtually unbreakable by the human hand when in use.

Is there any conceivable reason to have 1/4 inch stock on a folder other than to pry? Because I can't think of any and given the grinds makers tend to use it tends to severely hamper cutting efficiency. The awls and screwdrivers can already handle a fair bit of prying.

but lots of Vic's have lights. I have a Spartan and Signature II, both Lite versions

I have a One Handed Trekker that comes kinda close already. I personally wouldn't mind seeing a single layer One Handed Trekker-ish SAK, with a locking combo tool opposite the blade, and either a awl or Phillips for the flipside. A firesteel would be nice, too. Also a ball point pen.

Or maybe if they redid their old Mauser GAK with a locking one hand opening knife blade. The Mauser GAK is a really nice knife, though I'd probably prefer a Phillips to the corkscrew on this one, too.

My ideal SAK would be in something like VG-10 or S30V, maybe blue or black G-10 scales, with a drop point blade, can opener, screwdriver/cap-lifter, cigar cutter, and on the back - a phillips screwdriver and a corkscrew.
