A vendor tells me he has a knife I’d like to buy but he won’t send pictures unless I first pay for the knife. I’ve never dealt with him before, but he seems to be an established dealer known here. What would your answer be? Thank you.

Seems odd, if thats the whole story. Just move on. Plenty of knives out there.

If the knife is new, I don't worry too much about pictures unless the scales are of a type that are likely to show a good deal of variance.
For a secondhand knife, regardless of the descriptors (mint, NIB, etc), I want to see pictures.

I’ve been trying to clear my mailbox to no avail. Go figure. Stuff there since 1998. Thank you.

I don't get this, why the secrecy for a knife on sale? I never heard of leaving deposit just to see the picture of a product, even for the most sought after antique in large auction. If it is such a hot cake, why is it still here since 1988?

Laziness, who knows?
Then again, we havent heard the other side.
Sometimes, these cases are due to misunderstanding each other.
He says it’s because too many people ask for pictures and then say I’ll think about it.

True, we haven't heard from the other side, and the seller does deserve the benefit of doubt.

If the deposit is required for holding up the knife and taking certain picture of inner parts of the knife may bring harm to it(think unsheathing a real antique knife with a really weak handle?), I can see the point.

Not an acceptable response...and if “so many people have asked for pictures”, he should have a bunch ready to go. Lazy seller in my opinion.

I'd offer to trade him my fresh from spa treatment D2 sebenza, without pictures of course.

Just odd to me.

Whenever I post a knife for sale, I always include pictures, and take even more on my phone so that if asked for additional pictures, I can just fire them off. :)

No pictures? No money. Period.

Agree on both counts.

If thats the case, its an odd way to sell a knife. Sounds arrogant and/or lazy (we have seen both kinds of sellers here).
