I almost feel kind of dumb for leaving, seemed like I ran away or something.

Kyui Su Kim, you acted properly and responsibly. You already won. You were within you legal rights to carry the knife in the method that you were. The LEO confirmed this. You were dealing with a hysterical women, evidenced by her verbally attacking the LEO, and anything you said would have only inflamed this situation and made for a bigger scene. The LEO would not have appreciated your fueling her fire. NO need for that. The LEO was doing his job by explaining the law to the person, while you went on your merry way. But you could have ;) at her as you left.

Hey, I am just suprised that a Carmel Cop let you off with it, they have a rep around this area.

But I am glad that they did not give you any trouble, as I have my Rinaldi TTKK on me, and its about the same size.

I would have had a REAL hard time keeping my mouth shut if I saw that women complaining to the Cop. I have not really encountered this problem, but if they DIDN'T serve alcohol there, I would love to be in that situation. I would make sure she then caught a glimpse of my 45 on the other side of my belt;)

mschwoeb, I know what you mean about the Carmel Police. I was suprised he didnt drag it out, though he did have a check run on me, came out clean of course:D

BadGuy, I could only imagine what a gun would have made her do.:p

I would have finished my meal with a big smile, and afterwards (hopefully with my friends as well) nicely told the manager that he wld not be getting any of our business any more.
What *did* tick me off, was going to the local police depatment and inquiring about the laws here pertaining to knives. It seemed like no one there knew, including the sargeant who happened to be there. The answer i would up with was, "It all depends!".

As long as they didn't serve alcohol I would be totally legal. In the two years I have been constantly carrying a pistol, I have yet to have anyone say anything. I conceal it pretty well, but there are times when I know people get a glimse of it. Oh well, Read the Bill of Rights people!!!

I think that the only person that should have been embarrassed was this lady for the way she acted...geez! I agree with knifey-spooney, I bet it felt good to see the bitch shut down!
Carry on,
Matt

Yah, it is our right notto have other people telling us what to do. On the Bill of Rights I actually heard that the Supreme Court has cocluded that the 2nd amendment does not refer to private citizens. That may cause some real problems in the future of weapons and tools:(

Jerrinfla, I wouldnt be so upset with the manager in this situation. She had every right to throw me out but used better judgement and didnt. I actually went back to thank her for that.
I feel your pain about the Police not being a big help on that. I found mine in Law Ed books(I'm a criminal justice major) but that still dosent help with city ordanances and such. I have actually found that some gun shops know a lot about things like that but they can be kind of "iffy". The best way to find out is to seek an attorney or someone with legal advice.

Personally I would have loved to drop in on her cop chewing and remind her that I could counterfile a claim against her for filing a false report. Or at the very least, let her know she'll be contacted by my attorney soon for violations of my civil rights, and I'll be more than happy to spend a little money teaching her the proper carry laws, in court. Since I'm also Asian, I can be a real SOB and play the negative-sterotyping race card.

I agree with Kyui. Since the manager of the resturant didn't make the call, I don'y see why they should lose my business.

1. What are the knife laws regarding carry in public in your state? Wouldn't a tac folder or something comparably-sized have sufficed?

2. Carry laws are superceded by private establishment rules and regs, at least in the context of concert halls, etc.

3. If she saw the bowie in the first place, not only was it not concealed, but it was sloppy.

4. Public perceptions what they are in this day and age, and if she had her kids with her especially, other than her acting like a jackass with the officer, can you really blame her for her initial reaction?

After all, Indiana ain't the Wild Wild West ya know. Not necessarily my opinion, just givin' ya a flip-side-of-coin perspective. :)

Professor.

First, why should someone have to change the knife they prefer to carry because of someone else's idiotic boogeyman? If we all tailored our knives to what the biggest pansy in the dumbass public wasn't afraid of, we'd have one-and-a-half-inch Buck Gents in our pockets and nothing more, and certainly no serrated blades. You're for letting the fear of the sheeple be our common denominator??

Public perceptions being what they are, and her having her kids with her especially, I CAN BLAME HER FOR BEING AN IRRATIONAL MORON. Sure as sh*t it's fair to hold her accountable for being stupid. That's like asking if we can blame a person for calling the FBI every time a car backfires in their neighborhood because they think it's a terrorist bomb. YES, we CAN blame people for being scaredy-cat sh*theads. Does that answer your question?

The U.S. Supreme Court has NOT "concluded that the 2nd Amendment does not refer to private citizens."

You may be thinking of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, based in San Francisco (so you can imagine why they come out with half-assed ultra-liberal findings). They recently decided that the 2nd Amendment does not guarantee an individual right to keep and bear arms. This is in contravention of the finding of the FIFTH Circuit Court of Appeals (I believe it's in Louisiana or Texas -- I forgot) which found that it does INDEED protect an individual right. The Supreme Court appears to be chicken-sh*t about making a decision one way or the other, but the Department of Justice under John Ashcroft has issued a declaration that we DO have an individual right to keep and bear arms, and has issued instructions nationwide to the U.S. attorneys to govern themselves thus. One should bear in mind that the anti-second-amendment 9th circuit court is known to be the most overturned federal court ever, according to the National Rifle Association's magazine "America's First Freedom." I read recently that this court was once overturned on three cases in a single day! BTW, it's the Supreme Court that does the overturning on them. And this is the same federal court that said that "under God" is unconstitutional in the Pledge of Allegiance.

But please, don't perpetuate myths about the Second Amendment if you can help it by doing a little checking. The Supreme Court has NEVER made a definitive ruling on the Second Amendment; only rulings that have been twisted and distorted by the anti-gun-rights crowd.

If it was in Carmel, this whole ordeal must have been around shift change. :D It's nice to see Indianapolis represented on this thread. I am from the Broad Ripple area myself...

Mike

It's nice to see Indianapolis represented

It certainly is. I think that we actually have quite a few Indianpolis/Indiana knifenuts here on the forums.

I shouldn't, but must, respond to this thread.
Given that this happened in Carmel, I can understand the attitude of the WOMAN, don't call her a LADY..she obviously doesn't deserve that courtesy. She represents the classic attitude of too many of the "25 cent millionaires" in the Carmel area. We often refer to this attitude as that being of "the Carmel Housewife"....discourteous, aggressive, self-important individuals.
I worked in the Carmel area for the last 10 years of my "Corporate America" career. I loved the job and had great co-workers, but am quite happy to not make the daily trek to Carmel, now that I am in the cottage industry of full time Knifemaker.
The Carmel LEO exhibiting courtesy to you in this case is pleasant to hear about. They can be tough folks to deal with...remember they have to deal with individuals like that WOMAN daily!
Enough.
Personally I think you were fortunate that this turned out the way it did, even though you were apparently in the right. I personally have no particular desire to regularly frequent the Carmel area anymore...and have lived just south of the area since Carmel was a nice little farming community back in the 1950's and 60's.

Stay Safe,

I don't think playing a "race card" helps any of us.
It never does. It was merely added leverage against her own irrationality. It's entire purpose was to let her know what it feels like to be falsely accused on an irrational level.

If I were in a restaraunt, and someone said that to me, I would have replied that I felt uncomfortable with THEIR knife and to please not use it to eat their food since I felt threatened by their using it to cut into dead flesh.

:p

You lucked out, any LEO in my area, would have confiscated the knife for his own collection, and sent you on your way, with a warning and an empty belt. Of course if you offered any objection, you would wind up in jail. I know how you feel though, a previous employer once sent me to human resources for counseling, had security search my mini-van, and then sent me to a seminar on preventing violence in the workplace, all because someone had anonimously complained, that I had an NRA sticker on my mini-van, and had been reading a gun magazine during my lunch break, and they where afraid I might go postal or something. Unfortunately, complete idiots, are not an endangered species!

...Hey, if I could get away with toting my Busse Basic 9 hanging upside-down, diagonally across my back, under a coat where I live...

...I'd be all over it!

I'm just saying that maybe, just maybe, without realizing it, it's things we do like this (which I am 100% guilty of to lesser degrees) that damage our cause.

I've got a small Seb clipped in my pocket everywhere I go, and since I could care less about what people think, I don't look for reactions.

But I'm sure there's been a person or ten who's mentally gasped at the sight of it! ;)

Kyui knows I wasn't attacking his point of views either, and I respect his insight. I try to make at least 7 mistakes a day, and perhaps coming out of my hobbithole responding to this thread was #7 yesterday. :)
