Wow, a folding Kukri

i saw those when i got their new catalogue, and i was turned off even before i saw the price tag...

neat concept, but i wouldn't trust a folding knife to hold up to chopping, regardless of the lock device used or the strength of the pivot pin. just isn't a good idea in my eyes...

Wow!That's pretty cool. What type of steel is the blade?

May just be my first CS purchase

Those look alot like a Ed Schempp design I have seen before,

I like the wave... oops the unique thumb plate:jerkit:

I wonder how unique Mr. Emerson thinks it is?

Lol, I'm with ya. That's a blatent rip-off.

JWade, is this the one you are thinking of?

it does look rather similar...i would be interested in figuring out which one came first...

this is another interesting one;

also, i'm curious about the steel used in the CS...it isn't listed on the website or in the catalogue...

If anything is a ripoff, it's the Emerson Wave, of a Queen patent dating back to the 70s.

FWIW, I believe Cold Steel's thumb stud/"wave" is also patented by Andrew Demko, a guy who's designed a couple CS knives.

In any event, the Rajah knives seem to me too pricey and not very utilitarian.

Many times manufacturers and makers get permission to use design elements from each other. Don't go crying ripoff unless you are sure they haven't made agreements.

Ripoff or not, strong enough or not, I still think its a neat design. I like the spydie way more though!

interesting design....not bad, actually.

The "folding kukri" is indeed a foolhardy idea...no folder is going to be a good chopper.

BUT....a folding recurve is a very handy blade indeed...I happen to have one in my pocket right now - a Benchmade Skirmish. Very practical and useful in my shop.

So...I can understand how that will naturally make people want to explore the folding kukri idea. I have ventured on it myself...not making one...trying to find one that actually works even decently as a kukri. I have looked at production folders, custom knives and balisongs. So far, nothing even comes close.

But, I do think that the design and aesthetics of this new CS folder actually are pretty nice. To me, the Rajah II looks better than the Rajah I...ironic that it's cheaper. :p

The Cold Steel Rajah is a design inspired pretty closely by the original Nepalese kukris. I can't see it as infringing on any other companies' modern folders. The Ed Schemp is beautiful but it isn't the same. (I really want his barong, the second folder of his in post # 7.) The Emerson wave is a controversial "patent" anyway. Even Kershaw had a "bottle-opener" blade on their Talon that worked the same. Big thumb studs can wave a knife out if you know how to use them.

The Rajahs use AUS-8. We have a long thread on them somewhere, and Andy Demko joined in. I wouldn't know about chopping with a folder except that I do it with my Cold Steel AUS-8 lockback Vaquero Grande. :p

Edit: here's that earlier thread: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=558310

when it comes to cold steel I will put my money on it being a rip off. just MHO.

I have no problem with cold steel's stuff, they make decent stuff for the money , I have a problem with Cold Steel continually taking designs from maker and companys and renaming them and calling them theres and some other issues with how somemakers have been treated by Cold Steel. But that's another post in other areas ...

Sheky Thanks for the links, I didn't know about the Queen wave. Emerson definitly made it look alot better.. as far as the thumbplate opener I think its just a loop hole version of a wave,

Ed has been Making the Folding Kukri for about 5-6 years that I know of.
Spyderco bought the design from him.

would love to hear more on your experiences, Esav.

I didn't like it...the only chance I had to use one (never owned one..but did do some chopping with it).

How would you rank it in chop-ability? (1-10, 10 being a kukri)

shecky - just checked out the Demko/CS patent...it's on the knife, not the blade-opening mechanism.

Anybody more knowledgable than me on patents...feel free to jump in to explain.

:D

jimi,

I don't disagree with you on CS. They have done the right thing in the past, but more and more Lynn's small-man complex is getting out of control as he gets older, and he's getting more and more low-handed in his business ethics.

Just want to put up the caveat in general, because many times the agreements between parties HAVE been put in place.
