Wrist watch for outdoor use..?

I'm digging the Casio Pathfinder PAW15001V It's the pathfinder with the usual compass, barometer, and thermometer BUT atomic and twith tide and moon graph. Great for the woods, surfing, and fishing!

I'm wearing the Marathon Government Issue. It's real light weight, analog (very important to me), waterproof and tritium. The only thing I don't like about it is the crystal is plastic and not glass.

I'm a watch freak and give another vote for the G-Shock Mudman. Just cant beat them for the price to toughness ratio. I think they look great too.

www.Jomashop.com (based in NYC) is where I have purchased quite a few - awesome prices and you dont have to worry about getting one of the fake chinese rip-offs.

This is my current favorite I own - love the neg display.

Well, with my eyes, that digital stuff doesn't cut it.

Jeff ... this the same as the sell at Countycomm?

Casio G-Shock at Wal-Mart for around $67 USD. I have had one for several years that is Atomic and Solar and I love it. I rotate it with a Luminox and a Rolex Explorer that I picked up used.

I use a Timex Expedition. Cheap as hell and they can take a beating. They have several variants of the Expedition. I use one that has all the bells and whistles. Hasn't failed me yet.

um, I don't use a wrist watch - broke too many cases snagging them on things in the past.
I use a pocket watch with flip open cover on a lanyard.
I get water resistance, no scratches on the glass, and actual numbers on the face.
Tried one without the flip cover - timex - and shattered the crystal one day. Decided that was a bad thing to have in my pocket. Wally has really ugly cheap ones under $20, Target sells a "Coleman" for about $20 or you can find a plain covered relic (no embellishments) for $50 on sale ($30 at a Fossil outlet store)

I have an orig. G Shock it has no rubber left on it but I sewwd it to my pack and it's still going strong after 25 to 30 years. No problem with leaking and the battery has been changed many times. Had to replace the o ring several time just apply a very light coat of lubricate and secure the back. I don't dive with this anymore but it has been a super watch. I were a Tag but at $55.00 to have a battery changed I would get a G shock or timex Exp. Pocket watch to hang from a belt or pack. Hey maybe the new Rat Pack will have a built in watch?

Ive got a Casio G-Shock DW-9052, great watch that can handle the basics such as date, stopwatch, timer and 5 alarms, nothing more, nothing less.

Check out how this guy tested this particluar model here: http://forums.watchuseek.com/showthread.php?t=57302

So if you ever crash your car, roll it 20 times and end up flying over a 200m cliff into the freezing ocean youll be able to tell the paramedic exactly what time it happened :D.

I actually prefer a Victorinox watch, but my Timex Expedition was a third the price and I can actually read the face at night.Just another choice, but I much prefer the style over the G-Shock models, mostly because I don't like anything on my wrist all that much either. Also have an Expedition pocket watch that works great, but doesn't have the Indglo feature, so it useless after dark.

There are G-shoks with hands. :) However the best value I have seen for a watch you can read at night effortlessly is Uzi Defender with tritium tubes. For under a $100 you can get them - fantastic in the dark and strong too. I had one for couple of years and it went through a renovation with me. Still alive.

Does the glass on the g-shock get scrached at all?

On mine model it is actually a glass, not plastic. And cool thing that it is not on the very top of the watch, but rather sits deeper protected with a massive plastic and metal (hard to say) edge of the case

hi, i think the casio would be a good watch for you too. i'm a watch collector, so for me a watch with a good swiss mechanical movement and a saphire crystal are have to haves.

but your gonna move way up in price.

I second that. I used to have a Highgear but recently replaced it with a Casio Pathfinder PAW1300-1V and really like this watch. It's basically the same as the 1500, but without the tide/moon graph.

Nice... who makes it?

My father gifted me his timex expedition a few years ago, he was an avid hiker and when I first received it I thought the band was dark brown to match the leather wrist strap, after washing my hands a few times I came to realize it was just covered in mud, and in fact has a mixture of blues, blacks, and golds. Neither of us have been easy on it, I have taken a few short hikes with it and have played some tournament paintball, some woodsball games lasting 6+ hours of crawling through the woods, mud, and paint. IMO the timex is a very good watch and can take a beating. I haven't tried a G-shock yet so I can;t really compare the two.

I have heard bad things about the batteries on the solar models -have you had a good experience so far?

I had a Casio with solar charging that I bought around 2 1/2 or 3 years ago, the battery failed after a year and a half or so - it held enough charge to keep the time correct, but not to power the night light - pressing the light button immediately just gave the low battery warning. I depend on being able to know what time it is no matter how dark it is :)

I love the G shocks, they are a great value. You can find used luminox for under a hundred and the tritium tubes in them are nice.

I just got a Casio G-Shock Mudman a while ago (G-9000), seems to be a great watch so far!!:thumbup: Durable, no issues with water, great lighting, good simple modes. Got mine off the bay for $65. My first G-shock in a while...last one I had I gave to a friend years ago.

Most of the atomic Gs are solar power too. I am a regular on watchuseek.com. They have their own Gshock forum if you want to read about all the models. I have owned 2 solar Gs, no problems with the power reserve. I just sold my atomic solar Mudman yesterday. I still own 2 other Mudmans. I also own a few Seiko autos and one Doxa auto. For a cheap, reliable, tough, waterproof hiking/outdoor watch it is hard to beat a G. A lot of people dive with Gs too. Check these threads...
