“It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change.”

Congrats on 1000 Mike!

A mantra I drill into my scouts when teaching them fire prep is "Small Fire, Small Wood. Large Fire, Large Wood." Seems to wook in getting them to gather a full range of tinder, kindling and fuel.

"Mess around, mess around, soon you won't be around." It applies to all aspects of life and all situations and locations.

Size up the situation.
Undue haste makes waste.
Remember were you are.
Vanquish fear and panic.
Improvise.
Value living.
Act like the natives.
Live by your wits.
You beat me to it, I was going to post this! Except the version I have has a different L:

The funny part is, I got this off a package for a G. I. Joe toy! You Joe! and SAS rules! The best Special Unit in the world, for sure!

My five rules of personal safety:

Rule 1: Don't go there in the first place. If you don't place yourself in a dangerous environment it's highly unlikely that danger will come out of its natural habitat and find you (though it can--and does--happen)

Rule 2: If you end up there, get out as fast as you can.

Rule 3: Do whatever you have to do to get out as fast as you can.

Rule 4: Be PREPARED to do whatever you have to do to get out as fast as you can.

Rule 5: Don't let it happen it again.

"argue for your limitations and sure enough they are".

thanks for the chance and congrats!

I use to teach Industrial Safety Classes in all aspects of Safety from recovery to clean up and I made one up I used with all my classes, I think it works in most all situations, it's called SAFE.

Survey the area, look around are there people hurt, obvious hazards?
Assess the situation, what can you do, is it getting worse?
Formulate a plan, think through each step of your actions.
Execute it. When you decide what to do, do it, don't vacillate.

Easy to remember and straight forward

Thanks for the opportunity. A thousand posts, huh? I don't think that I'll live that long.

Bradford Angier on the importance of knives - "A man in the outdoors without one is a weakling, while the man with one is the master of a hundred situations."

"Never Eat Shredded Wheat."

Yes it's nonsense, but it helped me remember the order of the compass directions when I was a kid. N E S W, proceeding clockwise.

Haha I do eat shredded wheat though, it's one of my favorite breakfast cereals.
