WTF is up with shipping charges to Canada?

For the price of priority international it's just safer to add one or two dollars and use express international with tracking and insurance.

I think it is more likely that some companies ship using the cheapest level of service, and others choose to use a higher level, or a more expensive carrier.

Agreed. There's a HUGE difference in price between USPS First Class and Priority or Express Mail services, not to mention UPS or FedEx. About $20, in fact. I ship my custom knives and razors a lot with USPS, and always use Priority Mail, unless it's going out of country. Then, I use First Class to keep shipping down (unless the customer specifies, and is willing to pay the difference). Last time I mailed something Priority Mail to Canada, it cost me $22, I think. I know Roger at Knifeworks.com, and I can tell you he's very honest, despite the negative comment about his shipping. He (as far as I know) ONLY ships Priority Mail, so this would explain the shipping costs to overseas or out of U.S. packages.
