Xbox 360 vs Playstation 3?

I have had the Xbox 360 for about a year now and really like it! Halo2, Call of Duty 2, Far Cry, great FPS (First Person Shooters). I like FPS. Bust down the door and shoot everything that moves, or tries to move. YEAH!

I have spent many happy hours with blasters, rocket launchers, sniper rifles, grenades, shotguns, beam rifles, etc. Wish they had a few khuks....

Sports games, car racing, chopsockey, role playing, not as interesting to me.

So here comes Playstation 3. New gizmos, bells and whistles. But are there really enough differences to warrant a switch?

Costco has PS3 for $600 with 60gb drive, two wireless controllers, one ho-hum game (Genji).

I DO like to have the newest technology, but there is the cost; the trouble to hook it up, some new learning curve on controls --- and for what?

The Techno-Geeks have a lot of back and forth info. Reviews don't show me there is a lot of difference, or do they? Some are obvioulsy slanted toward one console or the other. Payoffs? Can't tell.

I am lost in this, so I want to throw it out to the Cantina. Anyone have PS3? Anyone can compare these two consoles?

I don't own either of them, and I'm soon to retire.....might enjoy a few hours now and then. Like Bill, I don't know enough to make an informed decision and would like to hear the advice of other cantinistas. Not so sure I would go for the door-kicking games (probably not as good as the real thing), but I might gravitate to being in the cockpit of a helicopter or a gunner in a tank crew.....anything like that out there?

Bill, I picked up a 360 a few months back, and I am having a blast. I had an xbox and then a PS2 (traded in the xbox for the PS2 so that I could play with friends...really loved my xbox). Two of my best friends are techno geeks. One actually works as a big wig computer tech for Ford. He poured over the stuff. Reviews, demos, first hand experiences. He pretty much found out what most everyone else has figured out....it's too soon to know what the Cell processor of the PS3 can DO. That said, he (and thus his brother and myself) jumped on the 360 side of things.
It seems that the 360 which retails for about $400 as you know, was slated to be priced right in line with the PS3. 360 was going to carry an on board HD-DVD drive while the Sony product was to carry the Blu-Ray. In a very smart move (IMHO), Microsoft dropped the internal Hi-Def drive to keep the price low. They have since come out with an HD-DVD add on drive if you want it.
What you are paying for with the PS3 is the Blu-ray drive. This hi-def format makes the pic crisper and holds a lot more info on one disc....with a trade off. Current drive technology just doesn't spin the disc fast enough to be able to read the disc quickly. Thus, your load times are longer on the PS3. Also, no one knows who is going to win the next generation of disc formats, Blu-ray or HD-DVD. In all honesty, I have heard it will be won by whomever courts the porn industry;)
At any rate, new gizmos are cool. however, I have found that the PS3 just hasn't shown to be the end all system. A lot of titles that were going to be PS3 exclusives have jumped ship and come up with titles that are also going to be on the 360. Keep in mind, Sony is the company that fell short with Beta Max 30 years ago;)

Now, all of that aside. You NEED to check out Gears of War for your 360. That is the most fun game I have come across in a LONG time. Beautiful graphics, rich story (kinda), bloody gib kills (people splatter),...oh yeah, chainsaw bayonets and "curb stomping" a downed enemy;) Not a game for the whole family, but there is nothing like sneaking up behind someone and splitting them forehead to groin with a chainsaw or doing a rolling shotgun dive and blowing their legs off:D If you pick up a copy, PM me. We'd love to show ya the ropes;)

dude, you're still playin xbox games on your 360??!?!!??! get gears of war!!!
did you know the ps3 controller doesn't even rumble? and lemme count all the good games coming out for it....mgs4.....that's one. that's it man. all the best titles are on 360 and wii. i was playin wii at my bud's place yesterday and its not what you wanna play when you feel lazy, though it is a lot of fun when you're not. ps3 stole the motion controller at the last second from wii too, so boo sony.

i can't believe i'm saying this...trust microsoft. seriosuly, get gears of war and you'll forget all about ps3. also, those ps3 games still feel like ps2 games. no one's exploited what the system can really do and no one will until hideo kojima releases mgs4. as far as capabilities of the two systems, they're about the same. this war will be won by titles, not hardware, and so far 360's kickin ass.

lastly, i recognize that older titles are awesome. i consider the bacwards compatibility of the systems a major selling point. that said, i'm more likely to buy a wii or ps3 because i want to play gamecube or ps2 games, 360 i want for 360 games.

I have a question for you, my son got the x-box for christmas and when you turn it on all you get is a multipage menu selection, when he puts the game disc in , it won't start it just stays on the menu page. how do you back out of the menu ? or is the game supposed to start automatically when you close the tray ?

Wayne the game should start automatically. If it doesn't, try selecting the last choice on the main menu that says "play game" or something to that effect. If that doesn't do the trick, swap out the disc with another (even a music CD would work). If it still won't play, then it sounds like a problem with the drive/laser/etc. The good news, I just got an e-mail from x-box that says that all 360's now come with a 1 year warranty. So, if you have a problem, you can send it in. Also, if you bought it from a big box store like Target or Walmart, then you should be able to return the defective console within 90 days for a swap-out.

Best of luck

On a side note, Mag if you ever wanna play some gears, hit me up:D That goes for anyone one on the xbox 360. gamer handle: FiveStile. :D I'm not very good, but my clan-mates usually just use me as bait anyway;)

Hope you don't mind me dropping in, but when I bought the original xbox, I got it either from CompUSA or Bestbuy and they offered an in-store warranty. It was around $80 or something, but it allowed you to bring back your xbox, no questions asked for a new one (replacement) within that two year period. Not sure which stores do this, but is great to have incase.

Just a thought :)

Well the consensus seems to be with holding off on the PS3... hmm, you could buy a few nice khuks for $600!

if it was down to a tarwar or a ps3, i'd go with the tarwar.
in the same hypothetical substituting the 360 or wii for the ps3, the results may be different.

I'd go 360...I like the shooters too.

I *do* have one of the the big Gears of War stand-up 3-D posterboard displays...that's as close as I can get to it right now.

If I had to get one of the new consoles myself, I'd probably opt for the Wii. Lower pricetag, compatibility with older games via that Virtual Console thingy...
... but I'd probably still get the Tarwar!

I have reviewed the stats and read all the reviews and played the demos on both PS3 and XBOX 360 for some time before I purchased. But because I have been tore up with Halo ever since its introduction,
I bought the 360.

I could see no definitive advantage as far as real game play. Sound, visuals, color, play smoothness, character motion all seemed to be the same with a possible slight edge to the 360 but not really much. One thing I did notice is that the 360 loads a little faster.
Halo 2 is bumped up a level for game play and visiual quality, but GEARS OF WAR just straight up kicks ass. I have seen NOTHING for PS2 OR PS3 "yet" in a FPS that even comes close to G.O.W. on the 360. Waiting for Halo3. I am expecting(hopefully) it to top G.O.W. quite handily.

Oh and Burnout 3 is a pretty damn good driver on 360 if you like the driving
games.

and when is sony gonna drop that lame controller??!?! here's a little info. i spent an entire weekend, nearly a full 48 hours awake (little sleep here and there) playing through halo on xbox, re4 on gamecube, and mgs3 on ps2. those little asain/children hands may feel comfortable with it but after the mgs3 weekend my hands were cramping for days. the gamecube controller was perfectly comfortable and the massixe xbox controller just rules. i wish you could get one on 360.

once again, 360 and ps3 are basically the same with different gimmics. thus far playin ps3 feels no different from ps2. just a lighter, flimsy feeling controller from the lack of rumble. it'll never happen cuz sony has so much money, but i hope kojima makes mgs4 crossplatform. then it would be 360 all the way and the death of ps3. unless square enix makes some crazy new final fantasy, which is what made the original playstation dominate. my ten year old ps1 is right here to my left. been a while since i turned her on, though. think i'll dig up FF7.

Right now, I'd go with the Xbox 360. It's been around longer, and they've had a chance to work out many of the bugs. Plus, Microsoft just extended the warranty from 90 days to a full year. Along with the fact that the 360 is pretty much the only system readily available, with a large library of games compared to the newer systems, and an exceptional online service, I don't see how you can go wrong with it.

Personally I wish companies would focus on the games. I could care less if my system plays DVD's, HD DVD's, or Blu Ray, because it's just more convenient to use a dedicated player.

Whoa Ho!

Xbox 360 for me! I have enjoyed it for the last year and it has performed flawlessly. Running it through a HDTV projector with component inputs. Home theater sound. Got the wife and dogs hiding under the bed.

ROCKS!

Just got F.E.A.R. a week or so ago. Not a great story line. but good guns and grenades. Strangly creepy.

HALO 2 is my favorite.

Gotta run. I think they have "Gears of War" at Costco. Gonna go get it.

Also I need to return my unopened PS3 game to Costco. Was thinking aboput eBay, but the prices are dropping and I thinkl -- from reading the posts here -- I now know why the prices are falling.

I was really interested in the PS3... but I don't have a TV that'd take advantage of the killer graphics it can supposedly do. I think that the games will come in time that'll take advantage of the cell processor. But for right now, it seems that the Xbox 360 rules.

As soon as I can afford an LCD HD/TV, I'm getting a 360. I've been waiting to play Halo for too long now...

go!!! run like the wind bill marsh!!!

if everyone else catches on, ps4's gonna be made in china. psp is gettin creamed by nintendo ds, too. in japan, everyone plays the ds, no one cares about psp. all the little kids in the states want the psp simply because it looks so cool so if your kids ask for one, tell em they don't know what they're talkin about and get em a DS Lite instead. or make em carry around the slim ps2, a flat panel display, and a power supply.

Only game I have(other than the backwards compatable Halo series) is Gears of War. Still haven't made it entirely through the campaign. I'm playing on a 20" bargain, non HD tv and I sure could use an upgrade. HD is really supposed to blow you away and showcase the console's power.
The story is nothing special, but the third person perspective is better than I thought.
Online is supposed to be where the real experiance is. Not hooked up yet though.

My console seems to make a lot of noise when it's running. Is that common?
Thanks
