XM18 4th gen.

HI, new to the forum. Would like to know if Mr. Hinderer is still making new XM-18 3" knifes?

I believe Hinderer Knives will build 3" XM-18s in the future. They seem to build in batches, they just completed a batch of Gen 2 XM-24s over the summer and the current batch of knives is the Gen 4 XM-18 3.5". I would love to get a Gen 4 X18 3" Production Slicer so hopefully they make some of those and I can find one.

And what the ratio between 3.5 versus the smaller 3"? Thanks all.

Hmm, about 6:7

:)

On a more serious note, all the specifications are here:

I highly recommend the 3" XM-18, I carry one daily.

Regards,

Rich

Thanks RDA, Ive been looking for any Gen Xm- 18 3" preferably non-flipper. But if the price is right I take a flip.:)

You are welcome. My 3" is a flipper, I like the XM flippers but I will eventually also get a non-flipper version to compare. Get whichever one you can, if you can eventually get both, you can always easily sell the one you don't like as well.

Hey RDA, I have heard that the "flipper" its easy to grab your pants when deploying?
Any words abut it?
cheers

I have heard of the flipper catching when removing it from your pocket (I suppose that is possible with any flipper design) but it has never happened to me. I do carry tip down so if I yanked it out foolishly and had the flipper towards the right side of my right pocket and it caught the side or edge of the pocket, I guess it could deploy the blade upwards. But, I don't go yanking out my knife foolishly.

The flipper on the 3" is fairly small, smaller than the 3.5" and the XM-24 and it is the most difficult of the XMs to flip (as the flipper provides less leverage and the blade is shorter and has less weight) but I can flip my 3" XM-18 fairly easily. Also, the flipper on my 3" has smooth/rounded serrations and edges and the flipper isn't prone to catching on anything in my opinion.

hopefully rick and crew dont mind my using this as a referance.

this is a 3rd gen

gen4.jpg

this is a 4th gen. notice how there is not a screw under the pocket clip point? that is because the stop pin has been moved upward under the clip point.

The slicer predates the Gen4. There is no necessary correlation between generation and blade shape. Only that the earlier gen's all appear to be custom grinds.

i also heard the detent is a little bit stronger on the 4th gen...

Some guys posted that it's really strong. Rob posted that when servicing XMs, many would come to the shop with a really weak detent, so Rick has beefed it up. This leads me to think that they'll break in over time - XM leave shop fine - returns with little detent. Now it should go like XM leaves hop with strong detent - returns for service with perfect amt. of detent.

Rick doesn't miss a beat, I'm sure he took all of the variables I can think of and many more that I can't and then went to the drawing board to create more Hinderer goodness for all of us guys.

I have to admit that my loose pants allow my XM-18 3.5" enough room to move a round a little. In the last month, the knife has waved open when jerking it out with the lanyard on 3 or 4 occasions. It just took a little turn on the pivot screw and it's back to awesome again. No big deal to me.

I guess as a knifemaker you'd have to compensate for the user who's not paying attention and stabs himself in the sack though! :D
