ok. So here is the sitch. (How many times do we get a kim possible quote here )

My son just made Eagle Scout. The current Eagle Scout knife is a Camillus for $150. I hate Camillus. The only real experience I have is in the navy with the pos SAK knockoff where we bought our own gerber sir leatherman.

He most reliable knife has been his gerber bg Scout. Say what you want. That knife has served him over 6 years and we all know that scouts are very easy on thier knives.

I am thinking of either the official scout eagle knife or a thier provided I can find proper engraving. Ie boyscout or Eagle Scout

Daughter: She is an artiist but she is of an age that if she is out with her friends she needs something to defend herself with period. I am thinking either a Gerber Ghostrike punch or a Spyderco ark .

Thoughts are welcome

A lot of online retailers offer laser engraving.

Once you decide on something, Google the item with various forms of the word engrave, i.e. engrave, engraved, or engraving. Laser engraving is pretty cheap.

As for your daughter, I would not recommend a push dagger. Don't give women bowling balls. Most of the girls I know carry little pocket knives or small multitools, otherwise they leave them at home and borrow your stuff.

He made Eagle, get him a proper knife. I'd go with a Benchmade Mini Crooked River from the custom shop. You can add the emblem to the blade.

As for your daughter: knives are crappy self defense tools. Get her some pepper spray and an SAK classic with a nifty graphic.

Is there a question in here?

The community can help you if there is a clear question.

Marble's Campcraft used to be the official Boy Scout knife (speaking as an Eagle Scout). Mine is not the original ($$$) but from Mike Stewart's era at Marbles, in 52100, stacked leather grips. Should be able to find one.

I have never been a scout, so I have to ask. Does it have to have the scouts emblem on it or is it just sentiment? And I do understand if its just sentiment. But if you are willing to shell out $150 or 180 for the official Camillus and it doesn’t have to say scout on it, you literally have 100s of great options for a young scout. And a good knife from a father is worth much more sentimentally than an emblem.

Concur 100%
If you are that concerned with her safety then you should enroll her in a women's self defense class. Effective methods can be taught in a matter of weeks. Far more effective than giving here a knife, which takes years of training to turn into an effective self defense tool.

I gave one of my sons a Spyderco Schempp Bowie to commemorate his Eagle. Modern, classic, and classy all at the same time.

My other son just sent his Eagle package to Council. He’s always been fond of my ZT’s, so I’ve been holding onto an 0900BLU sprint for him.

Either knife will last my boys a long, long time and give them a momento of the occasion well into adulthood.

Just my opinion, but I obviously don’t feel the need to gift something Eagle specific. On the other hand, I completely understand if you feel differently.

Buck offers an official BSA licensed Eagle Scout version of their 500 Duke knife. The price including custom engraving and shipping, is less than they sell the standard version of that knife for. So looks like a deal to me.

O.B.

Eagle Scout Son: my congrats by I have no opinion.

Daughter: She is an artiist but she is of an age that if she is out with her friends she needs something to defend herself.
The Spyderco Ark was invented to help our deployed servicemen who were apparently getting mugged...or raped in the showers by foreign (friendly) forces in the SandLand. This knife allowed our serviceman to always have available a last-ditch defense...even when "unclothed."
I think this would be just fine for your daughter...if she needs it, she REALLY needs it. I would suggest that you buy the fully SERRATED version. It will do more damage when/if the need arises. You must make sure that she trains enuf with it, so that pulling it is second nature to her...

If you’ll pay the price for a Spyderco ARK then let me recommend the Fred Perrin La Griffe instead. The ring finger grip will make it harder for her to drop the knife or for an attacker to remove it from her.

Will definatly look into those seee if they offer the emblem at thiers custom shop

A ring grip makes it illegal here :/

For your son, I would suggest the Victorinox Adventurer (111mm) which is a liner lock now. The old version (side lock) was a boy scout knife and some may still be around with the Boy Scout logo on it. If you feel that this knife is simply too large for him, I would go with the Vic Tinker, Electrician, or Pioneer. The Electrician has two blades which can be useful.

For your daughter, I generally don't think a knife for primarily self defense is a good idea as it provides a false confidence unless they are trained. There are lots of slim flippers available. The Boker Urban Trapper is one. Others might include the Kizer Dukes, Steelwill Mini Cutjack, SOG Twitch II (assisted), or one of the Spyderco's.

I have 3 daughters (all grown), so, with that in mind.

I will differ on the training issue. Women already make far more concessions to assault than men do, so it can be challenging to engage them in actual SD training, unless there is a pre-existing interest, or experience driving it. Training is the ultimate admission of, "it can happen to me..."

I would say the Ark is less threatening/more utilitarian, if seen or taken in evidence, but the PD is more effective. As long as she is aware that someone being hands-on, where escape is unlikely, is the "Go" trigger, and if she's willing to do that, a knife is fine. The willingness is what separates talismanic thinking from having a usable tool. Pepper spray and a really bright palm-sized light are good mid-space tools, with the spray being contingent on local laws.

Edit: I have no idea what the Ghoststrike feels like, but many rubberized handles are actually pretty slick, when wet. I'm a fan of gutted 550 paracord wrapping, and have used it on trauma shears.

God bless you & yours.
