Xmas Dilemma

I have 3 daughters (all grown), so, with that in mind.

I will differ on the training issue. Women already make far more concessions to assault than men do,
One she is a minor. But as we know this makes no difference to the threats that are out there.

As far as training. You can’t force something on someone else. And no respectable self defence course will simulate or train for predatory street assault with weapons.

I would say the Ark is less threatening/more utilitarian, if seen or taken in evidence, but the PD is more effective. As long as she is aware that someone being hands-on, where escape is unlikely, is the "Go" trigger,
Yeah she will need to know that the only time this is to be drawn out side the house is to use it. Not threaten to use it.

Funny enough. All nonleathal protection is illegal here. :(.
Tbh I want her to have a folder but she has only shown interest in fixed.

For your son, I would suggest the Victorinox Adventurer (111mm) which is a liner lock now.
He has the Vic. One handed trekker. An explorer, the gerber Scout, leatherman signal, and Mcusta katana (black belt gift) plus a few others he has gained along the way.

If you’ll pay the price for a Spyderco ARK then let me recommend the Fred Perrin La Griffe instead. The ring finger grip will make it harder for her to drop the knife or for an attacker to remove it from her.

Ah but the arc is h1....meant to literally be taken anywhere. I'd also push the arc having a more useful grind for daily tasks. Just my opinion and the Perrin is also a great blade.

I’ll have to take a look at the Perrin line

Son: Victorinox Explorer with Eagle Scout emblem @ Swiss Knife Shop is currently $48. Get that main blade engraved with something. The Explorer is my favorite SAK model, and it certainly emodies "Be Prepared" more than a single bladed Camillus. Get him a nice belt sheath to complete the package. It's pocket carry-able but only just.

Daughter: I second the above recommendation for pepper spray and a Victorinox Classic with a fun graphic. Women LOVE these. (Hell, I love them too!) They're never without a nail file or scissors.

If Ring grips make the knife illegal check out the Perrin Le Bowie. It is also a very small knife designed for concealed self defense but has abit more blade than the Ark. You might want to paracord wrap the handle though for abit more grip.

Another great knife is the White River Backpacker Pro. It is probably bigger than your daughter wants. Though but like the Le Bowie it also has a great grip because of deep choil.

Ark is a good choice too though. Can’t go wrong.

If I was in your position with an adolescent daughter who needed something for self-defense, I’d give her a couple canisters of the best-rated pepper spray I could find. My main concern would be that a teenage girl defending herself with a knife could have too severe a downside if things went wrong.

Sir, please, do not buy your daughter a knife to defend herself with. The first assailant she pulls that thing on will rip it right out of her hands, and...

I like the pepper spray recommendation.

Pepperspay is illegal here. Anything non lethal is illegal here. :(. Because that makes sense

So pepper spray isn’t an option. That’s a weapons felony here.
And the other option is. Nothing ?!? Seriously.

If it’s an assailent. They are already committing harm. And your choice is to leave her defenseless because it could get worse?

The best gift I received as a Scout was a Benchmade Griptilian. I received it before I made Eagle, But I think something from the Benchmade custom shop would be a great gift for your son.

Geez. If that's the case, maybe post 20 had a bit of insight with the EDC flashlight recommendation. Shades typically operate at night and in dark rooms. If an EDC light is illegal carry where you live, I'd strongly consider moving out of that country.

ETA: My choice would not be to leave her defenseless, and giving her a knife to pull on an man only means the knife will be used against her, not for her.

I'm going to sound like a rube here. But my father used to teach self defence for the police in England (way back in the 60's). And he always told me that carrying a knife can be dangerous as if you get jumped by a gang, get sucker punched or what ever. If they find your knife there's a good chance they will use it on you. It becomes a crime of opportunity and you gave them the means to do it.
Like others say. Self defence classes and teaching her how to avoid dangerous situations in the first place is the way to go.

Truth be told, you sound like the opposite of a, "Rube." Listening to wise and experienced advice from your dad and whatnot.

Get your son an ESEE 3, nice fixed blade and you can have it engraved.

As for your daughter get her a Spyderco Dragonfly 2 Hawkbill serrated, a Harpy, or a Delica. All of these are great for last ditch or get off me SD. Teach her how to shoot would be better.

Welll minors cant carry a firearm. So there’s that

So noone should carry a knife for self defence. Unless you have graduated from knife fighting school. That’s literally what you are saying

Get one of the three I mentioned.
I also agree about teaching her to recognize a bad neighborhood, situation, person and don't go or get out before something gets bad. I have loved ones I've tried to teach and they just are "too busy" to be safe. You only get one shot at it.

Everything you just mentioned is textbook advise.

Do yourself a favor. Google register sex offenders in your town. I imagine there will be at least 2 living within a mile of you.

There are 8 in my town 3 within 3 miles and I live in a quaint little New England town that is on tv most sundays in the fall and winter.

TBH i Came here for the insight on the knife. I truly don’t need the parenting advice I have that covered

St0ut, good luck finding your son a knife he'll be able to use and enjoy for a lengthy time. I and many others here certainly cherish the ones from grand/dad.
