OK the Busse's just landed and now we will start testing them against the other brands to see who is just hype and who has the gonades.

Here is the first test which I will publish right here.

We will put a Busse #7 up against a Cold Steel Recon Scout (CV) and a Mad Dog ATAK.

All are about the same size and have very similar blade geometry.

We will do most of the standard test you all know about and a few your don't know about. I have devised a scale which will compare each of the knives with a heavy influence on price for an overall score.

If you have any particular test you would like to see let me know.

Posts the results ASAP....

If nobody wants the Recon Scout after, I'll give it a nice home...

I am interested in the tests, I just received a battle mistress and badger attack, and will probably dupicated some of the tests for my own input.

On with the tests.

Only the #7's have shipped so far. The rest are due to ship next week.

Jerry also made me a deal I could not refuse! Look for a new post on a special run of #9's for BFC Memebers!

Also are there any people who want to come by and watch teh tests LIVE? If so you will need to come to Jacksonville Florida. Let me know as a witness is worth a thousand pictures!

Mike :

Is this to be described on the forums or in the on-line mag? Is this test in addition to the Trailmaster / Basic #9 one or a replacement? Any chance of getting a MPK from Mission? It would be interesting to see how Ti compares as a blade material.

I think Mission would be happy to supply a MPK. For comparison reasons I would rather use a stainless MPK but I understand you wanting to compare a Ti blade.

Any chance of getting a Newt Livesay RTAK thrown in?

What would be interesting is to see a comparison including areas in which the Ti knife would be in its element. I have not used Missions Ti but from talking to Rick it is very ductile but still fairly strong and tough. There are a couple of areas in which the Ti could win handily. For example since it it fairly soft it may be able to be sharpened very quickly with a simple butchers steel giving a coarse edge that will easily slice rings around the high polish that most knives come with. As well if you look at edge retention meaning how much work you have to do to maintain your blade, just having to use a butchers steel would give the Ti a high rating in this area.

Now this same edge could just be applied to the steel knives -but- ultra hard steels, especially stainless types, don't tend to take it very well. For one thing some of them are harder than a butchers steel and it will not file them readily, and even when they will take the mico-serrated edge because their ductility and impact toughness is so low the micro-serrations tend to fracture easily leaving a very low performance edge. In comparison, the Ti might just hold the micro-serrations for a long time with them bending around and such but resisting fracture.

There are other areas as well for example you might be able to thin out the edge. It might roll easily but you should be able to align it with little work and not have to deal with chipping. I would not expect Ti to perform well if used as a steel knife but if you take advantage of its properties it may be a strong performer.

Mike if you are serious about wanting to test one of Newt's blades, I will buy it after you finish testing it as long as it suffers no gross failure, and if it does then Newt should give you a refund so in neither case are you out any money. I was planning on getting a Rapid Deployment in the fall anyway.

Cliff,

What tests would you like to see me preform on the other knives?

Mike, I generally don't like to suggest particular tests to other people to avoid introducing my viewpoint into someone elses review. You did a great job with the first test on the folders and I look forward to this one.

RJ, the Bladeforums one. The first issue was due out sometime about now. I figured that this review might be in it.

I'd like to see the old chin ups with the blade strapped between two 2X4 as advertised in the ATAK try out with all three knives. Thank you.

how about soaking all handles in commonly found chemicals and seeing if any of them is flammable, just wanted to test the ATAK.
