For starters I know most people dont appreciate the traditional pocket knife as much as most of here do, so they dont appreciate what it means or stands for to us. Its more than just something you cut stuff with or carry around in case. I have a good friend who pulled out a knife the other day, something he got cheap, nothing fancy(china). So we started talking knives etc, etc. Then I pulled mine out also nothing fancy, a simple schrade old timer I carry around but its a good knife in my opnion. And my buddy was very impressed and appreciated the knife the way we would around here. So him being a good friend and someone who probablly didint have the extra cash floating around to be buying knives with I offered him mine. Of course he replied " What to keep, No way thats yours". So after I expained I had more than enough knives to get by with he took it. Now granted I didint have any extras of that perticular knife laying around home but at that moment I felt inclined to give it up. Maybe for a few reasons, I allready have a ton of knives and he pretty much had none, Or maybe a way to get someone new collecting, or whatever. Either way I dont miss the knife at all in the way I thought I might have but more happy about how much it meant when we were cutting up fish a week later and he pulled out that knife and started cutting, he had it all shined up and was quick to start talking about it with some other guys there. Granted it wasnt a fillet knife but for a guy with pretty much one knife it was what he used. Maybe it was more a lesson to myself about how much I have and how much I sometimes take for granted. Anyone else ever done this besides me. and not a chirstmas or birthday gift just given a knife to someone you thought needed and would appreciate it. - Joel

My high school bud, and my brother are both carrying knives I've given them. I just can't stand  having a close friend not having a knife on them, when I've got way more than I'll ever need. That's kind of what the "pay it forward" and "daughters giveaway" threads are about.

Sharing knives is part of the joy of this affliction.

Yeah, I've done that on a couple occasions. Most recently, a relatively new yet still pretty close friend of mine showed me his two knives as he was packing for a camping trip. He had a Frost one-hand-opener and a big Hibben-style sheath knife (QVC material, as opposed to one of the old Hibben customs). I sharpened them for him as best I could, considering the crappy steel of which they're made, and then thought better. Gave him a SAK (Vic Climber) and a Schrade Old Timer one-hand-opener (one of the green-handled ones). He was very appreciative, which made me feel good, and it was pleasant to do something nice for a friend. He carries the SAK daily now, and uses it lots.
Good on ya!

I think my nephews are trained when it comes to be around me and my knives, no matter how many I have given them in the past they never seem to have one on them when they are around me which leads to:

"Uncle Wade? Can I borrow your knife? I left mine at home."
"Sure...here ya go."
"Wow, that is nice!"

Now comes the puppy dog eyes and the reluctance to hand it back to me, they just stand there looking at the knife and then at me....

"Well you just keep that one if you like it."
"Really?, thanks Uncle Wade"

Somehow I think the wool they're cutting is being pulled over my eyes at times...lol.

Gradall5200, I have few spare USA schrade stockmans around, and would gladly give you one. If you are interested, send me a PM, or I'll post my e-mail, so I can get an address to send it to. Joe

We were invited for a BBQ at a friends summer-house "out in the nowhere" :D the other day and most of the people used kind of plastic "cutlery" for their steaks.
I had several spare knives with me and handed some 1950`s Kissing Cranes Harness Jack`s to 3 of my friends and they were more than pleased to have an adequate "tool" for their meal. :)
But later they were really astonished ;) :D when I told them to keep the knives and be prepared for a next unforseen occasion.

2 of them still have the HJ with them (mostly) when I meet them and have used them properly! :D

A few weeks ago, one of my co-workers walks in with the new cabelas catalog and starts thumbing through the knife pages, of course this got my attention right away.
As a new home owner it seems he now has a need for a decent pocket knife and asked my opinion, so now I'm in hog heaven, I get to spend someone else's money on a new knife. It didnt take long to figure out that anything decent was priced above his means. Knowing that I have more knives than anyone could use in ten lifetimes I suggest that I bring in a few for him to check out. The end result was that he now carries a well built NRA Buck 380 and I have a shinny new penny.

To one of our own VCM3 a William Zander custom trapper.
It still makes me smile when I think about it.

Why yes, yes I have on several occasions !
Either because I knew that person collected that type of knife, and I didnt at the time, so I found it a new home. Or just to see the look on thier face, lol

Uncle Wade, how about me.

Feels good doesn't it Joel. I did the same last month. I was doing some work, and a co-worker from Kansas City that I don't see often admired a knife I used to open a cardboard box. The next day I brought him one of my EDC knives, a Western stockman. Nothing too old or fancy and gave it to him. His remark was, "Wow, that's a nice one! Thanks.". To me it was just an extra pocket knife. I could tell he liked it and never had a nice pocket knife before. He'll enjoy it a lot more than I would have.

Do it on a regular basis, usually privately. Did have a public giveaway for young daughters on here a while back and will have one for young sons in the near future (after our move to the new house is complete  )

I've given away quite a few knives. It's a good feeling, when you run back into that person & see he/she has taken care of it.However,a couple people I've given knives to,I will never again. One guy in particular had his knife all scratched/gouged up like he tried to sharpen it on a curb or something!

I give them away as I can. A couple of years ago at a family reunion (Group camping) I was sharpening a knife to do some serious wittling and drew a crowd. One of the first was a young boy (about 11) with a poor mangled imitation SAK that he had found. He asked me if I could sharpen it, well the blade wobbled just holding it and there was a huge nick (chunk) in the blade, so I asked if his dad was around. His dad walked over and I asked if it was alright if I gave the boy something a little better. Dad had no problem so I reached under the seat of my truck and pulled out one of the SAKs I keep there. I gave it to the boy and showed the rest that had gathered how to sharpen a knife on a small pocket stone (even had a couple of dads asking questions). I ended up giving away 4 knives (I think) that week. Most of the time I get to give about 2 a year. I have carried a knife for about 39 years now and hate the idea of a generation growing up thinking that a pocket knife is an evil thing. Steven
