Yangdu... how about having the Kamis make THESE

The Sarge, with a white metal and wood handle!

Yeah, I was thinking Sarge as well, I have Yangdu getting Sarge to make a couple khuks for me... but since I had not yet handled anything Sarge has made, I did not want to be the one to suggest Sarge and look stupid if I was wrong. :D

Sarge is a retired Gurkha right? He might best understand what it is we want.

I believe he is a Sargent in the Nepalise army. I have one CAK by Sarge, and I can honestly say that it is my favorite. Something about the finish and workmanship that is amazing. He also mostly works with white metal.

Yup VERY similar... like I said, the issue for me is the handle. I don't want it covered in dragons and Asian art. They have a place, just not on a gladius. Really appreciate you posting the pics, the side by side shows this is clearly within the kamis reach... and this thread shows there is interest for such a product. This makes me smiley. :D

It is really important that the kamis get the basic specs right, even if there is some personal flare that goes into the design.

Weight 1.2-1.6 kg
Length 64-81 cm
Width 4-8 cm

This page might have some useful information to help the kamis Yangdu

Uh, Hiram, you might want to check about a 1000 more threads before you even come close to assuming that the kamis build to order, even if you think it's important. Ask Yvsa and Dan about the whole Foxy Folly effort. It took months, and even the exact weight was sent to the kamis in the form of actual weights. On some protos for other designs wooden models have been made. On Uncle Bill's last year he basically took no special orders because of the difficulty in getting them done.

Also keep in mind they are a lot of extra work for Yangdu.

The kamis never get it exactly right, especially "basic specs". Uncle Bill was married to the daughter of Pala and couldn't always get them to make things his way.

It looks like you already have a Gladius. If I want one I'll buy one from Windlass Steelcrafts or other maker. For HI I want their interpretation and creativity. They put every design through their own filter. That's what makes them so special. I love it that my Manjushris are different than everyone elses. Everyone here has one-of-a-kind knives. Saying "only 1 made" is like a guy bragging that he's from Africa and has a dark tan. (But we all like to do it anyway. :D)

If you want exact weight, design and 100% consistency you need to buy a modern manufactured production knife.

I'll be interested to see what the kamis do come up with though. By the way, your specs on the weight are 1 to almost 1.5 pounds heavier than any manjushi ever made, and won't be any longer, to the contrary. Sounds like you're looking for a heavy Bhutan sword. I would tell them "Bhutan Sword like Sher would make, + 1 pound". You'd probably get as close as you're going to.

Norm

I think this is as close as your likely to get.

Just look at knives like the Chitlangi Bowie, they are nothing like the bowie knives you're used to seeing.

You can't realistically expect an artisan that has been perfecting a cultural artform since he was a child to reproduce that of another culture on a whim.

Even getting a khukuri like the bonecutter reproduced faithfully is a challenge. I've read the threads about the design of the YCS, Foxy Folly and Berk Special enough to know that getting exactly what you want is asking a lot. But regardless you will get a blade made to the best of their ability that has more soul than any laser cut sword could ever hope for. Just my 2 cents. ;)

Well I just ordered a Generation 2 gladius. Not 100% historically accurate in design, but built like a tank. I look forward to seeing what the kamis come up with. :D

Your best bet for something special is to take a design the kamis know very well how to make, and alter it by combining a feature you've seen the kamis make.

For example, a 22" UBE with the hilt and crossguard of a chitlangi bowie, or a Movie Model without the double edged tip.

Remember everything they make is handmade so all lengths will be approximate. The UBE-chit-bowie might turn out to be more like 23" long.

Be prepared to wait a while too. Nepal is literally on the other side of the planet from the USA and they're having some political problems over there which have sometimes been interfering with khukri production.

Yangdu is on top of it guys, she sent me an email saying she has asked the kamis to give it a shot and we will see what they come up with. :)

I shold have mentioned that is a Generation2 Gladius with the Manjushree, not as beefy as the Manjushree but very fast and sharp!!

This verison is called the Pompeii, the one you refer to is waisted and flairs out towards the point, nicer choice of the two.

Just because my brain is not firing on all cylinders at the moment, I can read your sentence two ways, and both make sense... just curious as to which you intended.

Are you saying the the Pompeii or the Maintz is the nicer of the two? Sorry for being thick, but I want to make sure I understand which you mean. I ordered the Maintz last night, but they were on backorder, so I cancelled it. Before I place another order I was curious which you prefer. Also, $189 seems to be the going rate... some offers of free shipping out there. Are there any better prices to be had?

ETA:

I got this one on eBay... no edge, more of a reenactor's sword. I bought it to hang on the wall, I love the bone handle and the etchings in the scabbard

Sweet! I'm going to have to do a search for these and put it on my list. I'll bet you could get a decent edge on it as well. I'll save this thread for the info on the two models.

Norm

Norm I have not seen another like that one and I've scoured dozens of sword/reenactor sites looking for it. I found it on eBay and normally you see around a dozen or so of each model from various sellers. No others are like that one. If that is a complete real bone handle, guard and pommel, it should be a beauty. I'll know when it gets here. If it is not real bone, or if it looks cheap, the seller has a 30 day return policy. Not sure I would put an edge on that one. The Generation 2 ones come with an edge that decimates 2x4s, if I need one for destruction, I would just use the Gen 2 and leave this one on display.

The Maintz is the nicer of the two IMHO, thats about the going rate for Gen2.
I understand when those arn't firing, a strong cup of coffee and a good bowl of chili work for me.

Here is another sword I would LOVE to have! I have a licensed copy of the movie prop on order... not sure if it could take an edge or not... but imagine having one of THESE!
