Yangdu's start the year right sale. Pix and usual steals.

I can't believe no one sharked that sword yet.

(Yes, the thought did cross my mind, but I'm already waiting on 4(!) HI deliveries...I'll sit this one out. If I can.) Besides, I've got to save my money...I smell an Uddha coming. ;)

I would've grabbed that JKM without a second thought, though. :) Good snag for whoever got it.

Maybe it's just the photo or my eyes, but that looks like a pretty big fuller right down the middle of the blade.

That could account for the weight. ?

Nam
Nam me boy, methinks you are probably right.:) I'm gonna see ifen I can blow up the size without loseing definition to see if it becomes clearer. Sure would like a closeup of it!
I still like the other sword better though, I don't care for most Gladius style swords but a couple I've seen could definitely cause nocturnal emmisions. ;)

I resized the sword and sure enough there is a nice fuller running almost the full length of it. I tried to sharpen it but the pic was pretty fuzzy to begin with.:(

Edit:
Click on the thumbnail to get the larger size, for those who don't know.;)

That is a nice sword. Looks like a late model Gladius, the Pompei version.
The older ones had leafblades, like Sting, in the LOTR.

The fuller lightens the blade.

I have an Al Massey leafblade that has a 23" blade, and is just over 28" overall - the blade is just shy of 2" wide near the guard, and the sword runs 32 oz.

Could you at least get a burr? :D

I do like the peanut butter cup on top though. Nice stuff.

Smartass. :D ;) :D

You're right!!!! I was so busy looking at the blade I didn't pay any attention to the pommel!  :D

Currently my favorite sword design. I was wishing the other night that HI would make one, because they're one of the *very* few companies I would trust to make it well. (and not out of 420 J2 stainless!! :barf: )

Why do I have to be a poor student!?!

I hope these show up here regularly. Especially when I get a career...

Until you have seen, held, hefted and used an H.I. Villager model (anything) you just can't have any idea of what a value they are. Silver furniture and wood handles, superb blades, and easily the match of any of the more polished pieces in utility.

I got an AK villager last month for an uncle of mine because he wouldn't use the regular WWII I bought for him a year or two ago (too pretty according to him). When he got the villager, he was so impressed with its looks that he's decided to start using the WWII now. :D

Bill/Yangdu, do you know if the kamis still have some antler to work with? My said uncle is wanting me to keep an eye out for an antler handled khuk that's 15" or longer.

Nam are you really a poor student or do you just not understand the subject matter?
You DON"T Have To Be A Poor Student!!!! Believe Me!!!!

Being raised the way I was and often being told I wouldn't amount to a big rat's ass by the time I got into high school I was behind, didn't understand the subject matter, and was basically just a big dumb assed kid more interested in the girls and what I could get from them than I was in school work anyway.
I was also in 24 states by the time I was 13, the old man was an outlaw and didn't give a sh-it whether I got an education or not.:grumpy:
I flunked 10th grade English because I didn't have the background I needed and was having to take it over in the 11th grade.
My 1 year younger than I girlfriend missed a period and thought she was pregnant.
Back then, 1957, you did the right thing and got married, that is unless your family had money and could buy you out.
But this girl was the love of my life so we married. If she wasn't pregnant when we married she was damned sure pregnant soon after! I dropped out of school to go to work. Worst mistake I ever made in my life!!!!
Our marriage lasted 7 years but that's another story, but the lack of education had a huge bearing on it.:(

Anyway the reason I'm telling you this is because if you need help find a tutor and study, study, study!
If it's just because you're being lazy buckle down, suck it up and get with the program!
Talk to your parents about your troubles if you can, if not talk with some other adult you can trust and that can be a real mentor and guide you in the right direction.
Really, someone will be more than willing to help you out! If you were nearby I would do what I could.:)
The main thing is to get the absolute BEST EDUCATION you can get and that starts with public schools.
Believe me that when a youngen talks to a teacher sincerely and shows that they will hold up their end of a bargain the teacher will bend over backwards to help.
If they don't then they shouldn't be in the profession. Find another one who will help!:D

When I was 54 and out from work rehabing from my 2nd and then 3rd back surgery I enrolled to get my GED. I wanted the Gold and went for it.
I discovered that all the things I hated in school could be fun since I had grown up.
I discovered many things about myself, one being that I had a real horrible reading comprehension problem, a lot of it due to my upbringing.
I figured out that my viewpoint was different than other people's and what they might find funny I found tragic so I started telling them the answers they wanted to hear instead of what I thought and it worked!
I still sucked at math so I got myself a tutor and I did what I'm advising you to do!
I passed the test with flying colors and was elected to the National Adult Education Honor Society!
Only about 3% of the people that go for a GED get that honor.
I won a 2 year scholarship at our local Jr College.
I found out that I could of been many things instead of having to work at an ass breaking job that finally done me in medically and it pissed me off!

But I'm fine. I always said that if I could just help one person keep from killing themselves, save a marriage, change someone's mind about life and that indeed it is really, really worth living, then I would have done what I was put here for.
Nam, I'm a very rich man although we sometimes struggle to pay our bills because we're waiting on the next check to come in.
I have done all these things and more and more than once. Just the other day a young lady living in Northern Cal called and thanked me for all I had done to steer her right and that she often passed on the words I had given her to others.
Those things make me proud.:D
Just goes to show a person that they don't have to be strong and get around well to make a huge difference in helping someone better their life.
I just wish someone had talked to me when I was young, they could've maybe made a difference.
Believe me, there's help out there if you need it, find it and don't settle for being a "poor student." You're much more talented than that and I know that from the way you write and think.:D

You're absolutely right! Somehow I missed that detail. That would account for it certainly.

Nice piece.

Norm,

I don't have a 100 bucks.

It appears to me this Tin has a full tang. I thought some of the earlier ones did not, though I may be mistaken. I wish I wish is all I can say, and your post only POURED A WHOLE BUNCH OF SALT on my wood cutting dream knife wounds.

munk

Sorry Munk! And I also don't know if it has a full tang or not. Dumb question I guess I should know: how could you tell by looking at the pic? None of them have the chiruwa style tang, I can tell you that. (Haven't we had this conversation before? (-:) Sorry if this has already been explained to me.

Thanks,

Norm

Yvsa my friend, that was one of the most inspiring things you have written, and I thank you for it; it tells a lot about you and what has motivated you and shows how much determination you have. My experience was somewhat similar, with people always keeping me in my place, and I didn't go back to school and get trained in anything but blue collar jobs until I was in my 30's. Better late than never.

And it was typically thoughtful of you to write such a powerful letter to a younger person trying to help them out, and to help them avoid some of the mistakes you made. However, I don't think Nam was saying he was a "poor student", as in poor academically, struggling to understand the material. I think he was saying "poor" as in "temporarily financially embarrassed", cuz he was lusting after that pretty Gladius!

But hell, he COULD be a lousy student too, AND broke!, in which case we're both right! :D But I think your intuition is right, based on the way he writes and presents himself, so I'll hazard a guess that he is saying that right now he has more brains than dollars!

Regards,

Norm

Almost forgot to mention: that Kumar Hanuman AK is almost $50 off the price of what every other one has gone for over the past couple of months. I think Uncle Bill is having a real attack of generosity for the first UBBB of the year!

Doh! I didn't think of that. :o
I was not a "poor student" as far as money went although I had little for extras as most was spent on clothes and such for school.
From the time I was 14 I hauled hay or helped my grandpa by doing the dirty work in his plumbing business.
And from the tme I was 13 I passed our show calendars for the local theatre in Turley where we lived. One weekend a month or so got several of us boys a free pass to the show for a month.
I got spending money by sweeping up the auditorium and helping out in the projection room sometimes.
Maybe I was poor and just didn't know it.;)
I loved knives even then, can't remember when I didn't, and knives were pretty cheap even though I couldn't afford that many.
The famous Black Forest Hunting Knife that would stab through a quarter was only $3.00 as was the F/S British Cammando Knife at the local Army Surplus. then there were the Old Hickory Butcher Knives and lots of old bayonets.
I had lots of knives and fortunately never hurt anyone, seriously that is.:o

Edit:
Told you I had a problem with reading comprehension.:D ;)

Yvsa, thank you for your comments and advice. Though I am out of school and college now I still find them inspirational, especially in that you go out of your way to help people. Your good deeds and great help will live in the lives of others you have touched. Thats what makes life worthwhile.

Don't you just wish you could go back in time and buy a whole bushel of these things at $3 a throw! Unbelievable price. But then I remember my Dad telling me that in 1946 you could buy a war surplus 1911 for $35 or $40!

Norm, the Hanuman has a partial tang- you can see that there is no buttcap. The buttcap has a steel center; the end of the blade's tang. So, if you see a picture of a wooden or horn handled khuk without the brass buttcap, it is probable it is a partial tang. Partial tangs seem to come from HI pinned nowadays. My hanuman has a pin through the handle. Yvsa told me they weren't in earlier renditions.

The Tin Chuira (sic?) I saw several weeks ago did not have a buttcap.

Oh, of course, sorry. Yes, I understand that the hanuman and garuds and berk specials and janges would all have the partial tang then.

But check again, because all the tin chirra's (since the first one this year on 8/18) I have seen have buttcaps in place with the tang pinned down, unless I missed a special one, which I don't think I did as I rechecked them all since that August date.

Thanks,

Norm

OH Heck- You're absolutely right, Norm, I got the Jange confused with the Tins. I haven't seen buttcaps on them. Or have I? I need a new brain. This one has been too much abused and the warranty is expired.

Anyway you slice it, I sure wish I could get that tin.

munk

That Tin Chuira is nice... and the Tin is on my list for this year, you hear such good things about that extra fuller. At $95 it is a steal.... but I have it in my head I just like nickle silver better than brass- no polishing, just oiling... and horn needs maintenance and sometimes feels slippery to me.

Look at Villagers... their plain steel- they look different/great. I'm looking forward to my Foxy Folly- I just like that direction in khuk design. Steel, nickle silver, wood.

Can a lacquer be put over freshly polished brass to keep it from oxidizing and turning dull? What kind? I'd like to see this on my brass furnished khukuris.
