I actually really enjoy doing WIP threads, they just seem so much more interactive.

So here's what I did on Saturday (among other things)

Start out with a sketch to keep me on track.

Getting the point hammered in
wip-2.jpg

I really like my newish anvil, a 200Lb Chuck Robinson
wip-3.jpg

Crank it up baby
wip-4.jpg

Getting the Distal taper worked in
wip-5.jpg

My lovely wife grabbed a picture of me starting the Tang
wip-6.jpg

To get this...
wip-7.jpg

Getting into the bevels now, this is the fun part
wip-8.jpg

Cause it starts to look like a knife
wip-9.jpg

Three normalizing heats to get all the carbides happy
wip-10.jpg

A FRESH 36g Blaze puts the bevels in quick (and takes skin off even quicker, be careful)
wip-11.jpg

Satanite clay applied and baked on for the HT
wip-12.jpg

Running the forge down LOW (we don't wanna overheat it, slow is better)
wip-13.jpg

Quenching into my Parks #50, those flare ups are fun when you first go into the oil.
wip-14.jpg

And a quick polish to see if the Hamon is what we wanted, I'm happy with it.

A little refining of the original concept sketch

WIPs are pretty much the best kind of thread! And this one looks like a good one. Keep posting those pics.

Stephen, you got some serious skill and Mojo going! Glad to see you like your Chuck anvil, you sure are putting it to good use.

You are more of a man than I am hand-forging that 3/8" 1095. That steel is some nice stuff, but it will take its toll on an old man's arm.

Great looking blade my friend. Can't wait to see the final results.

Robert

definitely

this one is spoken for but I'm delivering it at Blade so I'm sure it will be around

Just finished polishing it out. I'm pooped.

c'yall tomorrow

Start out with a new 36g belt and get all the geometry where we want it

polish-1.jpg

Much better

polish-2.jpg

Layout and clamp a file guide for the False Edge

polish-3.jpg

Cut in the shoulders with a chainsaw file

polish-4.jpg

grind up to the layout lines

polish-5.jpg

We've polished up to 600g on the grinder, I stop polishing here and fit the guard and etch my mark.

polish-6.jpg

Guard is all fit up now

polish-7.jpg

A couple hours later we've polished up to 2000g and etched the Hamon

polish-8.jpg

And the other side

Sorry, not a whole lot done last night.
I've been fighting a bit of a stomach bug.

Anyways, I did get some work done.

First we have to pick an appropriate piece of stag
I want to use the one on the left and Ren agreed so we are off to the races

handle-1.jpg

First drill holes through the Pith all the way through the handle piece
You can see here also the tool I use to scrape out the channel for the tang.
It's just an old file that I annealed and cut up into the shape you see, then rehardened.
Also note the sharpie layout lines that keep me in line with the stag, VERY important.
handle-2.jpg

Here we've got our channel pretty well cut. I'm about dead ATM so we'll pick this up again tonight.
handle-3.jpg

great kinfe, I love this kukry-style design and the WIP thread is fantastic, step by step pics are really detailed and self-explaining!
the hamon line rocks!!!

you are using 1095 steel, aren't you?

Feeling much much better now, thanks

Sooooo, picking up where we left off yesterday.

first we layout and cut for the Sub-Guard

handle-4.jpg

Here I am laying out the slot onto the guard stock (1/4 x 1 - 416SS)

handle-5.jpg

Looking good, but probably a little bigger than we want it

handle-6.jpg

That's the ticket

handle-7.jpg

Threaded rod brazed into the tang (I cut out a slot w/ my bandsaw)

handle-8.jpg

Hmmm, seems we have a gap here when we screw things down tight

handle-9.jpg

That's much better

handle-10.jpg

Man, love the "inner voice" comments. That's so what I'd be thinking :D Great work!
