YAY a WIP

Got the nut Brazed onto the but cap material and everything glued up now

Start to work down the profiles everywhere

Details are important.
I carefully file grooves into the buttcap to match the Stag texture. (those are a PAIN to polish later... cest le vie)

Pretty much done now

and the other side. (couple scratches to get out)

I'll darken it up a little bit with some dye and do a bunch of detail sanding to get all the nooks and crannies.

Tomorrow I will get out the lightbox and take nifty pics, after I get the sheath done.

I hope you all have enjoyed watching the process as much as I enjoyed showing it. It's really been fun.

Thanks for the great WIP, brother - I really like it. The hamon looks perfect! Can't wait to see it 100% w/sheath.

Also, Stephan, if you get the time, I'd love to know A: Is the steel 1095? B: How did you etch, just ferric, what dilution, time, temp., etc.? And C: After the etch, did you shine it further with anything in particular? That hamon has such a well defined but satiny smooth look to it. Reminds me of Don Hanson's stuff.

Yes it is 1095, the 3/8 x 1 1/2 that Aldo Bruno sells

1 part FeCl to 5 parts water at room temp (probably around 60)
several dips at about 2 minutes each.
after each dip spray with windex and polish with 2000g except the last dip
with the last dip, spray with windex and thoroughly dry with a soft paper towel (I prefer Viva towels)

rub the blade down completely with Nevr-Dull (sold for polishing aluminum car rims) which will leave a good bit of oil on the blade, dust the blade with powdered pumice (I get it at Woodcraft) then rub HARD with a clean paper towel

repeat the Nevr-Dull and pumice until the paper towel doesn't turn black anymore

coat it with your choice of oil (I like Ballistol, it smells bad but works really well, I get that from Tracy Mickley http://www.usaknifemaker.com )

In the spirit of the WIP thread we have this first picture, just kinda shows my lighting setup. What you don't see is the big white piece of posterboard that usually ends up balanced or held in some oddball spot to bounce the light where I want it.

First we have the knife all by itself

I REALLY like how this shot came out. I've never really tried to use props before but I decided to go for it here and I'm pleased.

Best shot I had showing the sheath, don't mind the bit of yellow poster hanger stuff, I use balls of that to position the blade where I want it.

Gnarly Gnarly stag, I like it

And the overall handle

Excellent. Thanks for the temperline tips, I never would have known to try Nevr Dull and pumice. Kick ass sheath.

I have a shelf full of different polishing compounds and pastes, they all leave a slightly different surface finish.

experiment, you'll find a method that you like

4 year old thread. Pics were probably hosted on a service like Photobucket or Flickr and have long since had the URL changed or account abandoned. Besides, you know what happens if you comment on an old thread around here......;)

It is a shame it is gone though. Must remember if i ever do a WIP to put it on my own site, not rely on photobucket etc.
