YCS Sheath Design thread

Let's make a list of the ideas so far. Don't forget, this has to end up no more than a 4 (on a scale of 1-beginner to 10-expert) on the difficulty level. That is, it needs to be something that will stretch the beginner, yet require few tools and no specialized tools.

There are many people who can make leather sheaths....even kukri sheaths. If you got the $$$, then have them make you one.

This thread is for those who want to make one themselves. Perhaps we'll conclude with 2 or 3 good ideas instead of 1.....we'll see.

So far we got:

  • 1 - "stacked" multi-sheath: the kardas can be separated from the main sheath.
  • 2 - over-the-shoulder or baldric type sheath. (how would the tools work on this one?)
  • 3 - 100% leather quick-draw sheath
  • 4 - hikot-style (one sided wood) sheath

Suggestions/Ideas (non-sheath-specific)

  • A - Use PVC/plastic/kydex (works the same)
  • B - Use a belt loop instead of a frog (high or low? - had votes for both)
  • C - Kardas on the front instead of back
  • D - Room for one karda only to save weight
Time to start casting votes.....Pick a number and a letter (or two or add an idea of your own).

Looking good Dan!
My vote would be 3,B
I like the idea of a all leather, high ride quick draw sheath, with a slight forward tilt to the handle of the rig. Like the FBI tilt. Sort of a FBI khuk rig. :D

Either I never had the definition other than YCS or I can't find it. Do we have a definition for YCS?

I'm going to have a local leather maker make me two sheaths or one combo for the knives that come with the YCS.

He is in the process of making a sheath (old mountain man style?) for one of my Bowies and one of my Kumar Cutters (now called Tiger Knife?). I didn't give too much detailed instructions for the fabrication. I allowed the maker to use his creativity. Curious as to how it is going to turn out. Depending on the results I will contract for the two YCS sheaths.

Yvsa's Cherokee Special.;)

I like the idea of an opened back quick draw sheath. The one I made for my 12" Is working out great. Am going to make a piggy back sheath like it for my WWII in the near future. Going to be strong side carry with low or mid ride belt loop. Two snap opened back like the AK sheath with lanyard loop. :D

A PVC pipe sheath might be cool too!

Slightly off topic, but what's the ballpark price typically for having a traditional style sheath made?

Define 'traditional style sheath'

Gurka style
1880 style
plain leather sheath w/o imbellishments
other description.

Something that looks more or less like this, it would be custom fitted to a particular kukri:
