Yeller Tomcat Forge Tour

Bookie Be Back, Bawanna. Just home. Back in the 90's, I used 70 grains of FFG black powder to push a 550 grain nose pour bullet. Used open sights. Had a 30 knot crosswind. Fired from standing, unsupported position at a buck antelope at a measured by a State of Montana game warden to be 736 actual yards. Called the shot in front of 8 witnesses. They all laughed at me. The antelope took 3 steps and collapsed with the bullet passing through his heart. The sound of the Montana wind rushing through the teeth in their open mouths was most gratifying. I do like my Sharps.

Hehe, I don't disagree that the leupolds are a bit over priced, But I use a BORs ballistics computer from Barrett and they only work with Leupold, Schmidt & Bender, or Nightforce. So pricewise the Leupold is actually the <cough> "frugal" option.

I have to agree the Savage can not be beat for a non-custom. I usually use the 110 myself instead of the 10 because I prefer the long action for most of my builds. But since I am going with a 5.56 I decided to use hubbies 10 instead no need for a long action for that caliber LoL. It is funny that I used to love the Timney model 631 triggers and always swapped out the Savage trigger for one of those, but with the accutriggers I also have quit doing that. I think I like the new ones better than the Timneys I used to love LOL. The only downside with the Savage is the barrels only come in 1 in 9 for 5.56 So I will have to use the Kreiger 1 in 7 to get the heavier bullets to stabalize. I really think I can do better than 60% average with this thing at 1 mile, I can't wait to get it finished up and start working up rounds for it.

Hehe, I agree it is great being able to talk guns and khuks even when Hubby is snoring. :D

Woohooo Glad to see you survived Bookie. Those military re-unions can get wild ya know. And Sharps are just plain gorgeous as well as awesome. I was asked a few weeks ago if I wanted to go to the Quigley Buffalo Rifle Match out in Montana next year to compete in the Montana 1000yard. Unfortunately I won't make it. But if you LOVE your Sharps that is where you should be June 20th and 21st 2015. I don't have a rifle to compete but a couple of friends were offering to let me borrow one to compete in the lady's class but too many things happening around that time to allow me to get comfortable enough to compete. Bookie what caliber? 45/70 or 50/90? at 550grain that is a bit light for a 45/100 I think but maybe not?

I forgot you have the BORs...That is one expensive scope option but it is worth every penny if you are a long range shooter. I wasn't aware that the Savage only came with a 1:9 twist... You def need the 1:7 for heavier long range bullets. I forgot about this company they make the best 5.56 bullets for long range. They use a VLD or very low drag bullet that bucks the wind like no ones business and produces higher velocities with than other bullet designs of the same weight. It an amazing aerodynamic properties. They have 90gr bullets that might work in a single shot but definitely wont fit a magazine wells unless you are using the 110 action...then you might be in luck!

Hm. I thought 550 was doing O.K. in my Quigley .45-2 7/8. Haven't had a problem out to 1500 yards yet, anyway. I normally practice on 4 inch pigs at 220 yards, offhand. Sharps and I go back to '81 and there is a lot of TRUTHFUL stories (on my word as an officer and gentleman)I might tell you about long range, Hank Williams, Jr., Shiloh, and etc. That is IF you're buying a brewski or two.....an throw in a few pretzels for Bawanna, Pugs, Ndog, and SteveT. Maybe a ham sandwich or two.......pecan pie?....

Did you say pecan pie!!!!! My mom makes a pecan pie that will make ya cry.

Remodeled her house some 20 years back and the subs I had got a taste. We were doing it on weekends only mostly. They got to where they didn't care about the money but they wanted their pecan pie every weekend.

I need to have her make up some. Too long to wait for Thanksgiving or Christmas.

I was fondling a Quigley Sharps up at the Cabela's north of us a few weeks ago, wanted to bring it home soooooo bad.
It reminded me of my visit to the Ballard Rifle Company (now gone I think) in Cody Wyoming years back, gall dang they had some nice rifles.

Thanks Gurkha I will check them out, Maybe go back to a 110 for the longer action instead then.

Bookie, if I lived near you, you wouldn't have a chance of less than a couple of beers. I am betting you are one gifted...err true(?)...Story Teller! Now a 2 7/8 is also a 45/110 right? dang I do sometimes get confused with the math LOL. For some reason I was thinking poured bullets on 550g would be smaller than usual for a .45/100 but obviously I am wrong if you are using them for a .45/110. I am guessing you have one of those flip up tang sights? I wouldn't be able to even see a target out at 1500 on one of those LOL I am a blind old lady. Without my glasses (or a good scope) I can barely see the target at 50yards LOL. But if it means Beer and ham sammich's followed by Pecan Pie and tea I am in. Especially if we get Bawanna's Mom's pecan pie. Oh Man can I eat some pecan pie. I even like store bought pecan pie so you KNOW what a pie like his mom's would do to me. Follow that up with some good TRUE shooting stories and heck I certainly can not find a better way to kill a winter.

Here ya go Bawanna. Not my rifle again but a picture of one that I just love and wouldn't mind buying from the owner should I find myself $4K unaccounted for.

Ballard Rifle Company, Cody Wyoming. Pacific model, this rifle is chambered in 44-100 Everlast. 30" octagon barrel. Double set triggers. Color case Hardened straight grip receiver, lever and crescent butt plate. Fancy walnut wood. Ballard windgauge rear tang sight and spirit level front sight

I toured Ballard Rifle when I took my daughter to college over there. Very laid back shop, two guys making stocks, one guy checkering, and one guy doing each other step. Making the barrel, polishing, hand fitting. I got to basically sit with each guy and see what he did. They had an empty bench in the stock making room and we even measured how much to cut off the legs if I came to work for them.

They did offer to hire me to help checker their stocks. Wanted to send them back and forth, I wanted to move there and hang out with them. Sad they went under. I held a rifle, they had several in the showroom nearly identical to the one you pictured. No slouches in the bunch let me tell ya. Every one was like an HI kukri, drop dead gorgeous.

All the guys that worked there were shooters too. Great group every one of them cept the guy doing the frame polishing, he was kind of a jerk but he was talking on his cell phone so maybe he just didn't want to get to know me ya know?

The Sharps and the Ballards are really nice, but I've always had a preference for the Winchester 1885 Hi-Wall, John Moses Browning's original rifle design.

Bawanna, They still make rifles there in Cody. The owner who is the magazine editor, who is also the owner, and another owner--all with different business names is a friend and brother.
Blind Lady Shav--since you are having a little issue seeing, how about you tipping a 755 with 98 grains of FG down my little Shiloh? Ain't no kick, either., but it might bloody your nose. It will go through an engine block, however. Have barrel sights, mid & long range sights, flip up front sights, and a couple other gizmos that don't get used much. My initials are on the receiver. 'Spect we could go over to Bawanna's Mom's place and tell her Joe sent us to pick up a pecan pie........

Beer and sammiches and Pie!! im coming! and telling tales, who wouldn't, glad your back man.

OK Im leaving Texas now with a big arse bag of peekans and a case of Guinness! See yall in a few days. I dont know much about grains and FG's and 44-100's but pecan pie, pork sammiches and beer is speakin my language:D

We'll leave the light on for ya. what's Guinness? Anything like Busch lite?

That sure is a beauty Bookie and the sights look like I might not be too unfamiliar with them, But 98 grains FG with no kick? Lol I am used to 60 grains FFG and equivelent FFFG. Isn't FG large crystals more for something like a cannon? LOL. I am barely familiar enough with BP to keep from blowing myself up, so I might be absolutely wrong, that is just something I thought I heard long long ago. I love the old Sharps, Ballards ect. I have fired both Shiloh and Pedersoli Sharps. But I have to admit that I am definately not familiar enough with them to be able to discuss them knowledgably. I love hearing people who know discuss them though so lets throw in Spencers and see if I get any more to read about a wonderful topic ;)

I'm not to smart on black powder either but I know that the F refers to the fineness of the grain. FFFF is usually a primer for a flintlock with F being the other end of the scale and I would think canon would be the appropriate usage which I think Bookie's rifle qualifies as if he's using 98 grains of it. I've never even seen F for sale before. I have a few pounds of FF and some FFF for my Hawkins.

Reading this makes me want to take it out and get it dirty again. It was delightfully accurate last I used it.

Ran into a fella with a near identical rifle 54 cal out in the woods, he had a group about 11 or 12" pretty much filled a paper plate and he was so proud. This at a mere 100 yards give or take. Told him to save his pride for when he could put em in a golf ball at that range which fortunately for me I managed to demonstrate for him. I felt very lucky that day, usually play the fool in that scenario and miss the plate entirely.

Yep Bawana, So you are confirming what I thought I understood, that Bookie is carrying a cannon disquised as a rifle. :D
And funny enough I understood exactly what you mean by being lucky. You can do it 9 of 9 times but if that 10th happens after talking smack that is usually where it starts going wrong for me LOL. Or you can shoot so you hit the plate only once and all the other bullets went through that same hole

Oh yeah. I had my brother in laws dad question why I carried a Ruger Super Blackhawk on my hip while deer hunting since I couldn't hit nothing with it anyhow. I set up a pop can (I think it was root beer) walked back turned and fired like Wyatt I kid you knot Earp. Nailed it square.......but could I leave it there and walk away????? nooooooo, ran out of ammo trying to hit it a second time.

I expect Mr. Bookie would not experience painful experiences such as mine. He seems to know what he's about when it comes to the black powder tools.

Bawanna! Don't you dare go and blaspheme Guinness, elixir of the gods!! Goes great with Butterfingers, tatties & neeps, a pound or two of haggis, and of course, Bornholm herrings. Speaking of Wyatt Earp. He used to live about 10 miles from here before him and the family got run out of Galesburg and moved to Pella. Family was known to be mean sonsabitches and I ain't talkin' about Steven Oscar Bookout, neither! They still have his house. I metal detected his cousins yard south of town here and found a brass belt buckle with a heart. The heart matches a popular heart used on a horse's martingale in the 1800's. Yes, 98 grains of FG and a 755 do kick. I can only stand about 5 shots before I feel uncomfortable. If you want to have fun, how about a 50-140? It eats 140 grains of black and the case is only 3 and a quarter inches long. My fully loaded 45-70 will drop out of sight in the empty case, so if you're into pain and money is no object, here you go!
