My story:

I have carried folders every day as long as I remember. Carried a Spyderco Caly3 for many years. My go to carry of late is a Ritter Mini Griptilian.

I have decided I want something to put in the rotation that is a little bigger and beefier. Not monstrous, but solid.

My list of preferred features is below. I am willing to be flexible on some if the overall package is perfect otherwise.

1. USA Made

2. Quality Steel. Doesn't need to be a Super Steel, but a good decent manageable stainless-ish. S30V is a good one I'm used to for example.

3. Good build quality with screw construction. Full steel liners a plus. I like grippy rather than slick. Solid.

4. G10 or equivalent scales. I have polymer covered with the Mini Grip, so I'd like something else.

5. 3-4" Blade length.

6. Lock. Well, this is trickier. I love the Axis. Have used the Back Lock. Not a huge fan of Liner Lock, maybe on a Frame Lock. This one is fairly open.

7. Price. Prefer to stay under $150.

Things I have looked at and have on my consider list:

Spyderco Manix2 FFG G10

ZT 0566

So there you have it. I don't know what all is out there that I just may not be aware of. If you think of something that I should consider, please let me know. And Thank You in advance.

BM Bone Collector, get it while you can it was just discontinued.

I just got a Manix 2 XL S90V. A lot of threads can be found on it and a bunch of people say it is too big for EDC, but it's worked great for me. You can buy the S30V g-10 variant for just over $100. If you want something substantial I say go on the bigger side, as nothing is worse than wanting an suv and ending up with a station wagon because it was "more practical".
If you like the axis lock the ball bearing lock on the manix series is comparable. As you might have read already, it's harder to actuate but "feels" more solid. I can open and close it one handed like I can an axis now, but it took a few days to get the hang of it. Plus I enjoy the "spydie flick" you can do with the oversized spyder hole for a quick one handed open. I really don't think it looks as enormous as people talk it up to be.

whats wrong with a large Griptilian.
And then replace the scales.

Heres mine..A 550 with DOAT scales.

And I still do not see all the hype about ritters.
Relabled Griptilian.

If you are willing to give FRN a shot, I highly recommend the Manix 2 Lightweight. Excellent knife. About $80CAN...and trust me...it may be linerless, but it's plenty strong enough for most reasonable applications.

I would reccomend a ZT0801, titanium frame lock, ELMAX steel, the only real problem is that the titanium scales are a little slick. If you dont mind giving liner locks a try then I'd go with a ZT0350, great blade

Good suggestions.

I thought of a full size Grip, but by the time I get scales I'm up in price and I already have the others. Looking to go different path. And I can't explain the Ritter blade, but I like it!

Manix2 XL is a little bigger than I want. I have held one. My only concern with standard Manix2 is that the actual usable blade length is barely more than what my Mini Grip has.

I liek the looks of some of the ZT, hadn't considered the 0801, I'll look at it.

I don't know what a SnG is, but I'll see if I can find info.

Manix 2.
theres even a pimped out one for trade right now.

as for usable blade.
you say 3 to 4 inches.

the manix and LRg grip have always been more than sufficiant for me.
But to each their own.

perhaps alittle more info as to what your doing would help others
guide you along that your worried about usable blade.

Becuase if you after that. The Tenacious has more...
Never mind its ChiCom but a Nicley made Commi'co I mean Spydeco.
I love mine tenacious

Manix 2 small or XL. More solid grab than an axis lock. The spring is a bit tougher to overcome, but that is good.
The sebbie 21 and Manix XL are my only two knives. The XL is what I use mostly in the shop when making handles and knives. I just used my XL to cut a bunch of drywall, some prying. Heavy cardboard and more. It just takes a beating and wants more.
Used or like new 85-110$

I have no problem with the full size Ritter Grip, but really want to try something different as well. I also have found the full size Grips to not feel as solid to me as the Minis. I know they are fully capable, but am interested in a different experience.

prisoner6

Alittle more insight as to why the issue on
""actual usable blade length"" specifcally about the manix2.

If you dont mind used blade I would highly recomend a PM2

I would say try a Spyderco PM2 or a ZT 550. Oh and look a Hogue EX-01 3.5". I have all these and they are all keepers!
