I often carry my Bark River Slither. It has a 5 inch blade and a kydex sheath. It is very comfortable in a cross draw position.

It really depends on where you live. I spend half of the week in the country and the other half in the city. When working in rural areas fixed blades are a common sight around here and even in small towns it's very normal to have a knife on your belt, as long as you behave as a sensible person there's no problem whatsoever.
On the other hand, I wouldn't carry a fixed blade in the city, folders work better in that environment. I do keep a fixed blade in my backpack, though.
