Well, i planned on posting this yesterday, but that live chat occupied most of my time, so time for the pics.

i have recently been practicing my tarp setting skills for shelter, so i went outside with some blades, my heater/oven, some food my tarp an some other essentials. Among these blades was an axe i picked up on saturday at a gun and knife show. its a plumb victory hatchet and, according to the guy i bought it from, it is from around WWII ish. it was $30 originally, but i talked him down to $20. it came pretty sharp, but the handle was a disaster. it had about a 45o bend in it, so i put a knew handle on it, although my handling job wasnt the best.

anyway, the axe was, overall, pretty nice. it is better at splitting that my GB because of the flatter cheek area, rather than the hollow on the GB. i still prefer my GB for most everthing, but i am pretty impressed with this one for $20.

anyway, the pics:

the shelter was a little small. the tarp is 6x8, and i am a touch over 6'4''. i still fit in pretty well, and the stove kept is really warm.

also cooked some lunch on the stove:

some more knife pics on the way!

barber that is a nice looking ax, but you may want to set the handle a little bit deeper so that the sawn split is above the center line of the head, and then re-wedge. You will get a stronger connection that will last longer that way. joe

Nice looking axe.

I think that tarp would fly away if it got windy...did you sleep in it like that? I also think it is inside out. I like to use something that doesn't stretch for a ridge line. Pull it as tight as you possible can before throwing the tarp over it. Then pull the tarp out and stake it out to keep it as taut as you can. You want the surface of the tarp to be tight and not wrinkly like you have it.

Good point, ev. That's why I usually use a trucker's hitch on any ridge line.

google it...first result will show you the truckers hitch. Its a simple knot and allows retightening really easy.

I prefer to carve 4 small stakes (more if its real windy), tie the corners to the stakes and stretch it as tight as you can, then pound stake into ground. I also tend to not even use a ridgeline and just tie off to the grommets in the middle. It works fine and water doesn't soak up the ridgeline and drip on your face all night. I tie bowlines to connect the cord to the tarp and wrap the other end around the stake and back over itself to keep it taut.

Hey bf, looks like the others got it covered. Checked my hard drive - didn't have a picture.

Nothing wrong with that, but to stop water dripping in your face, tie a 'drip line' on each end of the ridge line.

Nice ax. Be careful using it as a hammer, though. Doing that could crack it on the side along the eye. I think they tend to flex there.

Nice axe man...looks like a good day overall. I went to the gun show on Sunday. Wasn't too impressed honestly...and the cover was stupid high IMO at $12. There was a cool knife vendor there...he was only about $15-$25 over most places...typical for gun shows. Chris Reeves, Ontario, Emerson, Spyderco's, nice knives. You go to that one too???? In OKC?

i was definatly disappointed at how high the admission price was, and how few booths there were. an entire row was pretty much empty. i have never gone to the shows in OKC. i just go to the wanenmachers which is trice a year and is huge and then the sooner ( the recent one) which is usually small. too many shows would be bad on the wallet, and i dont even buy guns.

gonna have to try to catch wanenmachers. My bro in law says it is most awesome. I went to the sooner gun show too. Got my RAT model 1 there...bought some 308, then out to thunderbird range for a full auto shoot....THAT was an awesome day!

the wanenmachers is alot of fun. it fills up the entire expo/quicktrip center. i always find at least a couple of awsome deals. like last time, i got a brand new stromeng leuku for $35 ( usuallt 90). also, i think that show coasts less to get in.
