Your axe appears to be a rehandled WWII item. I have one and the steel is quite good. Nice find.

Do be careful hammering with the pole. It is not hardened and will peen over quite easily. Also, as noted, you can distort the eye. Try to restrict hammering to wood stakes, wedges, etc.

Y'alls beat me to the punch about the ridgeline, the ax handle (thin out the side a bit more for a deeper fit) and restricting your hammering to wood stakes, wedges, etc. To that list I'd add enemies, you can hammer enemies with that poll as well.
